Pakistan Tennis Federation Announces Davis Cup Training Camp Ahead of Senegal Clash

The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) has officially confirmed the organization of a comprehensive Davis Cup training camp as part of preparations for Pakistan’s upcoming Davis Cup tie against Senegal, scheduled for February 6 and 7, 2026, at the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad. The camp marks a crucial phase in Pakistan’s efforts to assemble a strong and competitive national squad capable of delivering a positive result on home soil.

The initial phase of the training camp will be held at the Defence Club Grass Courts in Lahore from January 12 to January 24, 2026. During this period, Pakistan’s leading senior and junior male tennis players will undergo intensive training sessions focusing on fitness, technique, match readiness, and team coordination. Following the Lahore leg, the camp will shift to Islamabad, where additional junior players based in the capital will join the squad from January 25 onwards.

Strong Mix of Experience and Youth

The training camp brings together a balanced combination of seasoned professionals and emerging young talent. Veteran tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who also serves as President of the PTF, headlines the list of players selected for the camp. He will be joined by fellow experienced campaigners including Aqeel Khan, Muzammil Murtaza, Muhammad Shoaib, and Yousaf Khalil, all of whom have represented Pakistan at various international competitions.

The full list of players invited to participate in the Lahore training phase includes:

  • Mikaeel Ali Baig
  • Abubakar Talha
  • Nadir Mirza
  • Ahtesham Humayun
  • Zohaib Afzal Malik

In addition to the senior squad, the PTF has extended invitations to some of Pakistan’s most promising junior players residing in Islamabad. These juniors will join the camp once it transitions from Lahore to Islamabad, giving them an opportunity to train alongside senior professionals and gain exposure to high-level preparation standards.

The junior players invited for the Islamabad phase are:

  • Hamza Roman
  • Hassan Usmani
  • Abdul Basit
  • Haziq Asim

Focus on Grass-Court Preparation

One of the defining features of the training camp is its emphasis on grass-court tennis, with sessions being conducted at Lahore’s Defence Club Grass Courts. This surface-specific preparation is designed to help players adapt their movement, serving patterns, and shot selection ahead of the Davis Cup tie.

According to PTF officials, grass-court training will allow players to sharpen their reflexes, improve serve-and-volley skills, and fine-tune strategies suitable for faster playing conditions. The choice of surface reflects a deliberate effort to ensure Pakistan’s players are well-prepared for any tactical demands during the tie against Senegal.

Experienced Coaching and Leadership

The camp will be held under the supervision of Rashid Malik, who will serve as Team Captain. He will be assisted by a team of experienced coaches including Mushaf Zia, Muhammad Khalid, and Shahzad Khan. Together, the coaching staff will oversee training drills, fitness routines, match simulations, and tactical discussions.

Captain Rashid Malik is expected to closely monitor player performances throughout the camp, with selection decisions for the final Davis Cup squad based on form, fitness, discipline, and overall readiness.

PTF Leadership Emphasizes Long-Term Vision

Speaking on the occasion, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, President of the Pakistan Tennis Federation, described the training camp as a vital step toward strengthening Pakistan’s Davis Cup ambitions.

“This training camp is an important milestone in building a competitive and confident national team for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Senegal,” Qureshi said. “After the camp concludes, we will announce the final team. We have also invited top junior players to train alongside senior professionals so they can gain valuable experience that will benefit them and Pakistan tennis in the future.”

Qureshi highlighted the importance of mentorship, noting that young players often develop faster when exposed to elite-level environments and professional discipline at an early stage.

Encouragement for Junior Players

PTF Secretary General Col. Zia-ud-Din Tufail echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the training camp offers a rare and valuable learning opportunity, especially for younger players.

“The camp is scheduled on the Lahore grass courts, and we are confident that the players will prepare thoroughly for the challenge ahead,” he stated. “We strongly encourage junior players to make full use of this opportunity provided by the Pakistan Tennis Federation. Training alongside senior players will help them understand the demands of international tennis.”

Final Squad to Be Announced After Camp

At the conclusion of the training program, the PTF will announce the final Davis Cup team that will represent Pakistan against Senegal in February. Performance during the camp will play a decisive role in squad selection, ensuring that only the most prepared and in-form players earn a place in the lineup.

The upcoming Davis Cup tie is viewed as an important moment for Pakistan tennis, both in terms of results and long-term development. By investing in structured preparation and blending experience with youth, the PTF aims to strengthen the national program and build momentum for future international competitions.
