Ashleigh Barty managed to win nine games in a row after losing her first set to win over the former champion Maria Sharapova to reach her first quarter-final of a Grand Slam event of her career at the Australian Open.
Talking about her match, Barty said, “It was a little close, wasn’t it. I gave myself a lot of opportunities in the third set. I could not take it. I just had to take a deep breath and trust in the work I had done with my team. She was an absolute champion and she was not going to ever go away.”
Barty will now face the Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova for their quarterfinals match after the eight seed defeats her American teenager opponent Amanda Anisimova by 6-2 and 6-1.
As for the match of Angelique Kerber, the three-time grand slam winner suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of her unseeded American opponent Danielle Collins by 6-0, and 6-2.
Collins talking about her defeat said, “I may not have won a grand slam match before this, but let me tell you, I think it I going to happen.”
Collins will now face the fifth seed Sloane Stephens or the unseeded Russian player for the quarterfinals match.
