Turkish giants Besiktas have completed the permanent signing of Tammy Abraham from Roma after triggering a mandatory purchase clause in his loan agreement, before immediately preparing to sell the striker on to Aston Villa. The complex transfer move has seen Besiktas pay around £11.2 million to the Italian club, while Villa have agreed a significantly higher fee to bring the England international back to the Premier League.
Abraham, 28, travelled to the United Kingdom on Friday and successfully completed a medical examination on Saturday after Aston Villa finalised an £18 million deal with the Super Lig side. Although Besiktas were keen to retain the striker following his productive loan spell, contractual obligations and Abraham’s desire to return to England ultimately shaped the outcome.
The Turkish club had included an obligation-to-buy clause in the loan agreement that brought Abraham to Istanbul from Roma last summer. Once specific performance conditions were met, Besiktas were required to make the deal permanent. While they would have preferred to keep the forward for the upcoming season, financial realities and the opportunity to make a substantial profit prompted them to reluctantly approve his departure.
In an official statement, Besiktas confirmed the activation of the purchase clause and the payment to Roma.
“The conditions in the transfer contract of Kevin Oghenetega Tamaraebi Bakumo-Abraham have been fulfilled, and the provision for the permanent transfer of the player has come into effect,” the club said.
“In this context, a transfer fee of 13 million euros will be paid to AS Roma.”
That payment effectively completes Abraham’s permanent move away from the Italian capital, ending his three-year association with Roma. His time in Turkey, although brief, proved successful, as he scored 12 goals in 24 appearances across all competitions for Besiktas. His physical presence, movement, and finishing ability made him a key attacking figure during his loan spell.
Abraham’s performances quickly reignited interest from Premier League clubs, with Aston Villa moving decisively to secure his signature. Villa see the striker as a valuable addition to their attacking options as they look to strengthen ahead of another demanding domestic and European campaign.
The Birmingham-based club agreed an £18 million fee with Besiktas, allowing the Turkish side to make a notable profit after fulfilling their purchase obligation. For Villa, the deal represents an opportunity to bring in a proven goal-scorer with experience across England, Italy, and European competitions.
Abraham’s career journey has been marked by significant highs. He originally joined Roma from Chelsea in 2021 in a £34 million transfer, a move that followed a prolific loan spell at Aston Villa earlier in his career. At Roma, Abraham enjoyed immediate success, scoring 27 goals in all competitions during his debut season under Jose Mourinho.
That campaign culminated in Roma lifting the Europa Conference League trophy in 2022, with Abraham playing a central role throughout the tournament. Over three seasons with the Serie A side, he netted 39 goals in 120 appearances, establishing himself as one of the club’s most reliable attacking threats.
However, injuries and tactical changes eventually limited his consistency, prompting Roma to sanction loan moves in search of regular football. During the 2024-25 season, Abraham spent time on loan at AC Milan, where he scored 10 goals in 44 matches. While his spell at San Siro showed flashes of his quality, Milan opted not to pursue a permanent transfer.
His subsequent move to Besiktas offered a fresh start, and Abraham embraced the challenge of Turkish football with enthusiasm. His contributions helped stabilize Besiktas’ attack, and he quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his work rate and finishing ability.
Internationally, Abraham has earned 11 caps for England, scoring three goals for the national side. Although competition for places in England’s forward line remains fierce, a return to the Premier League could provide him with the platform needed to reignite his international ambitions.
For Aston Villa, Abraham’s arrival adds depth and experience to their squad. His familiarity with the Premier League, combined with his growth from spells abroad, makes him an attractive option for a team aiming to compete on multiple fronts.
From Besiktas’ perspective, the transfer represents a pragmatic decision. Despite their reluctance to lose a productive striker, the financial return and contractual circumstances made the move unavoidable. The club will now turn its attention to reinvesting the funds and reshaping their squad ahead of the new season.
As Abraham prepares for the next chapter of his career back in England, expectations will be high. With his proven track record, physical attributes, and experience in high-pressure environments, he will be eager to make an immediate impact.
