Ex-Chelsea player Oscar retires with heart issue

Former Chelsea and Brazil national team midfielder Oscar has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 after being diagnosed with a heart-related condition. The news marks the end of a long and successful career that saw the talented playmaker perform at the highest levels of club and international football.

Oscar’s decision comes after a concerning health incident that occurred in November while he was undergoing routine physical testing at the training facilities of Sao Paulo. During the session, he reportedly became unwell, prompting immediate medical attention and hospitalization. Following thorough examinations, doctors determined that he had experienced a case of vasovagal syncope, a condition characterized by a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure that can lead to fainting.

Although vasovagal syncope is relatively common and often not life-threatening, its occurrence in professional athletes—particularly in high-intensity sports like football—raises serious concerns about long-term health and safety. Medical experts advised caution, and after evaluating his situation carefully, Oscar made the difficult decision to step away from the sport.

The Brazilian midfielder had recently returned to Sao Paulo, the club where his professional journey began. He had signed a three-year contract in January 2025, signaling a homecoming that many fans had eagerly anticipated. However, with two years still remaining on his deal, Oscar has now mutually agreed to terminate his contract due to his health condition.

In an emotional message shared on social media, Oscar expressed his disappointment at having to retire earlier than expected. He revealed that he had hoped to contribute more to Sao Paulo and believed he still had the ability and fitness to continue playing at a competitive level. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond his control forced him to reconsider his future.

“I wanted to do more for Sao Paulo, I wanted to play more,” he shared. “I believe I still had the footballing quality and the age to continue, but unfortunately this situation has changed everything.”

Despite the disappointment, Oscar’s message was also filled with gratitude. He thanked the fans of Sao Paulo for their unwavering support since his return and acknowledged the encouragement he received during what has been a challenging period in his life. He also made it clear that although his playing days are over, his connection with the club remains strong.

“Now I will retire and continue supporting Sao Paulo,” he said. “I will follow the club as a fan and carry these memories with me. My career has taken me to many places around the world, and I am grateful for every moment.”

Oscar’s football journey began in Brazil, where he quickly gained recognition for his technical skills, vision, and creativity. His performances earned him a move to Chelsea in July 2012, marking the start of his European career. At Stamford Bridge, he became a key figure in the team during a successful period for the club.

In his debut season, Oscar helped Chelsea secure the UEFA Europa League title. His ability to control the midfield and contribute in attack made him an important player under various managers. Over time, he established himself as a regular starter, known for his work rate and composure on the ball.

One of the highlights of his time at Chelsea came during the 2014-15 season, when the club achieved a domestic double by winning both the Premier League and the League Cup. Oscar played a significant role in that campaign, contributing to the team’s success with consistent performances.

During his time at Chelsea, Oscar made 203 appearances and scored 38 goals. While his numbers were impressive, his influence extended beyond statistics. He was often praised for his intelligence on the pitch, his ability to link play, and his knack for delivering in important moments.

In January 2017, Oscar made a surprising move to Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League. The transfer attracted significant attention due to its financial scale, as well as the timing, given that Oscar was still in his prime.

At Shanghai Port, Oscar continued to excel, becoming one of the league’s standout players. He played a crucial role in the team’s success, helping them win three Chinese Super League titles. His leadership and experience were invaluable, and he became a fan favorite during his time in China.

After several successful years abroad, Oscar returned to Sao Paulo in 2025, bringing his career full circle. His return was seen as a major boost for the club, both on and off the pitch. Fans hoped that his experience and quality would help guide a new generation of players.

On the international stage, Oscar also enjoyed a notable career with the Brazil national team. He earned 48 caps and represented his country in major tournaments, showcasing his talent on the global stage. One of his most memorable moments came during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he scored a goal in Brazil’s semi-final match.

Although his international career had its ups and downs, Oscar remained a respected figure in Brazilian football. His technical ability and understanding of the game made him a valuable asset whenever he represented his country.

Now, as he steps away from professional football, Oscar leaves behind a legacy defined by skill, dedication, and professionalism. His career spanned multiple continents, leagues, and competitions, reflecting his adaptability and commitment to the sport.

While his retirement may have come sooner than expected, it also highlights the importance of prioritizing health and well-being. For athletes, making such decisions is never easy, but Oscar’s choice demonstrates maturity and responsibility.

Looking ahead, Oscar is expected to remain connected to football in some capacity. Whether through mentoring young players, engaging with fans, or taking on a role within the sport, his experience and knowledge will continue to be valuable.

For fans, his retirement marks the end of an era, but also an opportunity to celebrate a career filled with memorable moments. From his early days in Brazil to his success in Europe and Asia, Oscar’s journey is a testament to his talent and perseverance.

In conclusion, Oscar’s decision to retire due to a heart condition brings a premature end to an impressive football career. While the circumstances are unfortunate, his contributions to the game will not be forgotten. He departs with the respect and admiration of fans, teammates, and the football community worldwide.
