Carlos Brathwaite scored a stunning century in a thriller match between West Indies and New Zealand, but all of it went in vain as the Black hats got a 5-run victory. With this defeat, Windies hopes to make it to the last four finally comes to an end.
Kane Williamson led the batting order of New Zealand after he scored 148 runs to set a target of 291-8 in a match played at the Old Trafford.
West Indies were due for a win in this match as they had an early 152-run partnership between Chris Gayle who scored 87 runs and Shimron Hetmyer who scored 54 runs.
However, after their wickets feel at 142-2 and 164-7 respectively, these hopes seemed a little farfetched.
At the time of despair, Brathwaite came to the pitch and went on to score 102 runs off of 82 balls.
He was completely composed on the pitch as he struck some huge shots to let Windies be on their way to victory. However, all these hopes came to an absolute end after he was bowled out on the last ball of the penultimate over.
Although Windies now suffer an early exit from the World Cup, New Zealand is back on the top of the group table and can now start planning ahead for the semi-finals.
Windies only need 6 runs on the final ball of the final over but Neesham who had been giving him slow balls did it again.
Nonetheless, Brathwaite tried to hit it up but could not finish with a big hit and was caught out by Boult. As he got out, Brathwaite, heartbroken, fell on his knees in total despair while the New Zealand team celebrated their thrilling victory.
