Charlie Edwards gets to retain his title after ‘no contest’ but then being punched while on the floor

In the Saturday night fight for the defense of WBC Flyweight title between Charlie Edwards, the current holder and the challenger, Julio Cesar Martinez, it was Edwards who was able to retain his title in a bizarre turn of events. Edwards thought that he could save his title but then the fight was called for no contest due to an illegal punch ruling.

Edwards suffered a barrage of hits from Martinez during the 3rd round but then he also hammered Edwards with a body shot who was already floored which went unpunished and caused the end of the fight.

The no-contest ruling was then announced to the crowd over the microphone, which was already celebrating Martinez s the new champion of the title belt.  The news was announced by Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of WBC and he now also expects for an earlier rematch.

Edwards said, “He did hurt me bad.  I am not going to deny it and this is why I took a knee. However, it was the shot on the floor that took me out for good.”

As for the stoppage win of Martinez being overturned, he said, “I do actually believe that this is a right decision because I took a knee for a reason. He finished me off with his body shot. Cheaters never prosper.”

Martinez came to this fight as a power puncher who had already stopped Andrew Selby, the former unbeaten British boxer to earn a right of this title fight.

Martinez gave Edwards a rough beating in the 3rd round and Edwards was forced to sunk to his knee and looked in serious trouble.  But then Martinez went on to punch him more which was illegal despite having already been given KO victory.

Sadly all that cheering from the crowd and the happiness of Martinez dulled down with the last moment announcement from the WBC president.
