Chile defeats Colombia by 5-4 on penalties to make it to the semis of Copa América

After their two goals were taken away from them on video reviews, Chile still managed to keep its cool and stay on the right track to defend their Copa America title.

After overcoming two VAR decisions on Friday, Chile was still able to make 5-4 win against Colombia on penalties to make it to the semifinals of the South American tournament.

The decisive penalty kick of the game was scored by Alexis Sánchez that allowed the two-time defending champions to move into the semifinals of the tournament.

Chile is going to play either against Peru or Uruguay who is going to play their quarterfinals match against each other on Sunday at Salvador. As for the other semi-finals’ match of the tournament, it will be played between Brazil and Argentina.

Reinaldo Rueda, the coach of the Chilean team who happens to be a Colombian, said on having two of their goals dismissed, “We have to get used to it. Sure, it causes a feeling of frustration. But if you celebrate a goal then you also have to accept this kind of decisions as well. Luck for us, the players did not lose their cool and kept holding on to their mental strength despite everything that happened.”

Beside Sánchez’s goal, the other four goals of Chile were scored by Arturo Vidal, Eduardo Vargas, Erick Pulgar and Charles Aránguiz respectively. As for the 4 goals of the Colombian team, they were scored by their players named James Rodríguez, Edwin Cardona, Juan Cuadrado, and Yerry Mina respectively.

Colombia who was hoping to make it to their 2nd semifinals of the South American tournament in a row was also defeated by Chile in the semifinals of the tournament back in 2016.

Chileans have been able to make the most out of the Colombian teams for their past 4 meetings with them in this tournament’s knockout stages as well.
