In the five-set thriller match played between Dan Evans of Great Britain and Joao Sousa, it was Evans who came out losing the game at Wimbledon.
Sousa was able to beat the home favorite by 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, and 6-4 and thus became the first Portuguese player to have reached the last 16 of the All England Club tournament where he is now going to face the world rank no. 2 Rafael Nadal.
Evans said, “I am not sad but I am really disappointed. I thought I could have a good run here. A chance to play against Rafa would have been a great experience. I still fought as hard as I could and this is what I could do.”
As for the Swiss Great, Roger Federer, he is close to his goal of winning the Wimbledon this year as he managed to move into the 4th round of the tournament for the 17trh time in the last 19 years.
Federer was up against Lucas Pouille whom he defeated by straight sets with scores of 7-5, 6-2, and 7-6.
In addition to reaching the 4th round, Federer has also become the first ever player, either it is in men or women singles, to have won the 350 Grand Slam singles matches.
He will now play against Matteo Berrettini who defeated Diego Schwartzman 6-7, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, and 6-3 in what was the longest match of this year’s Wimbledon. The match concluded after 4 hours and 19 minutes.
Rafael Nadal was able to make it to the 4th round with his dominating and masterful win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga by 6-2 6-3 6-2 win.
In other matches of the day, Kei Nishikori was able to win his match against America’s Steve Johnson by 6-4 6-3 6-2 to set up the 4th round match against Mikhail Kukushkin.
Mikhail Kukushkin made it to the 4th round meeting with Nishikori after defeating Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany by 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, and 7-5.
As for Italian player Fabio Fognini, he had a very unsettling comment to make after his 6-3, 7-6 and 6-3 defeat against Tennys Sandgren. He said, “I wish a bomb would explode on this club.”
