How Hodgkinson broke a 23-year-old world record

Keely Hodgkinson’s record-breaking indoor 800m performance in France was not a moment of luck or surprise for her team — it was the result of years of planning, resilience, and belief. When the British middle-distance star stepped onto the track in Liévin on a Thursday night, she carried with her a quiet confidence built through relentless training, mental growth, and lessons learned from past setbacks. Her coaches and support team had long believed the world record was within reach, and Hodgkinson herself entered the race with an unwavering mindset that she was ready to make history.

The 23-year-old, who had already established herself as one of the world’s best 800m runners after her Olympic triumph in Paris 2024, delivered a breathtaking performance by clocking 1:54.87. In doing so, she shattered the long-standing indoor world record set by Jolanda Ceplak nearly 24 years earlier — a record that had stood since March 2002, coincidentally the very day Hodgkinson was born. The symmetry of the moment added even more emotional weight to an already historic achievement.

However, her journey to this milestone was far from straightforward. Since her Olympic success, Hodgkinson faced a series of injury setbacks that tested both her physical strength and mental resilience. Hamstring issues disrupted her training plans and forced her to withdraw from key competitions, including an earlier attempt at chasing the indoor world record in 2025. These recurring injuries could have derailed her momentum, but instead, they became a turning point in her development. Her training group, the M11 Track Club, even began referring to her renewed version as “Keely 2.0,” symbolising her transformation into a stronger and more focused athlete.

Training under the guidance of experienced coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows in Manchester, Hodgkinson refined not just her physical conditioning but also her race strategy and mindset. Meadows, a former international 800m medallist, played a key role in shaping Hodgkinson’s approach, carefully balancing intense sessions with recovery and psychological preparation. The coaching team intentionally avoided overtraining her during the build-up to the Liévin race, choosing instead to trust the training process and Hodgkinson’s ability to deliver under pressure.

The choice of Liévin as the venue was no accident. The indoor track there has a reputation for producing fast times and record-breaking performances, making it an ideal setting for a serious world record attempt. For months, the date of 19 February 2026 had been circled in the team’s calendar as the prime opportunity to chase history. Statistical analysis, training benchmarks, and Hodgkinson’s improving fitness all suggested that the record was within reach if everything aligned on race day.

Interestingly, despite her dominant performance, Hodgkinson reportedly believed the time she ran was only the minimum of what she was capable of achieving. According to her coach, she even felt there was potentially another half-second — or even a full second — left in her legs. This mindset reflects the high standards she sets for herself and her relentless pursuit of excellence, even after breaking a world record.

The training demands of the 800m event are notoriously brutal, requiring a delicate balance between speed and endurance. Meadows has openly described how physically taxing the sessions can be, with Hodgkinson sometimes pushing herself to the point of physical exhaustion due to lactic acid build-up. The discipline required for such preparation highlights the immense dedication behind her success. Unlike some athletes who rely purely on natural talent, Hodgkinson’s greatest strength lies in her mentality and her ability to consistently maximise her potential.

Mentally, the past year has been one of the most challenging periods of her career. Injuries not only disrupted her preparation but also forced her to adapt her expectations and rebuild confidence. Even with limited training, she managed to compete at the World Athletics Championships in September, where she secured a bronze medal behind team-mate Georgia Hunter Bell and Kenya’s Lilian Odira. While the medal was a commendable achievement under difficult circumstances, it reportedly did little to satisfy Hodgkinson’s ambitions. Her focus remained firmly on winning gold medals and breaking records.

What truly separates Hodgkinson from many of her rivals is her mindset. Her coach has noted that while she may not be the most naturally gifted athlete she has ever coached, her determination, discipline, and mental strength allow her to extract the absolute best from herself on a daily basis. This psychological resilience became especially evident during her recovery periods, where she remained motivated and committed to long-term goals rather than rushing her return.

Looking ahead, Hodgkinson’s record-breaking run is likely only the beginning of another historic chapter in her career. She is expected to compete at the upcoming World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland, where she will enter as a strong favourite for gold. Beyond that, her ambitions stretch even further — towards the outdoor 800m world record held by Jarmila Kratochvilova since 1983 with a time of 1:53.28. That mark has stood for more than four decades, making it one of the most enduring records in athletics history.

Hodgkinson’s personal best of 1:54.61, set in London in 2024, already places her among the fastest runners ever. With uninterrupted training and continued physical development, her coaches believe she has a realistic chance of breaking the outdoor record in the coming seasons. There is even a strong possibility that she would prefer to achieve such a feat on home soil in the UK, where the atmosphere and crowd support could elevate her performance to another level.

Another fascinating aspect of her development is how her coaches tailor training routines to keep her mentally engaged. Unlike some athletes who thrive on repetitive structures, Hodgkinson benefits from varied goals and creative training approaches that maintain her motivation. This adaptive strategy has helped her stay focused during rehabilitation phases and intense competition cycles.

Ultimately, Hodgkinson’s journey to breaking the indoor 800m world record is a story of perseverance, strategic planning, and mental toughness. From injury setbacks to global glory, she has demonstrated an exceptional ability to bounce back stronger and continue chasing greatness. Her ambition is not merely to win races but to leave a lasting legacy in athletics and be remembered as one of the sport’s true legends.

With her confidence restored, fitness improving, and hunger for success stronger than ever, the future looks incredibly bright for the British star. If her recent performance in Liévin is any indication, the athletics world may soon witness even more historic milestones from Hodgkinson as she continues her quest for greatness and aims to redefine the limits of women’s middle-distance running.
