At the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Johanna Konta has managed to cruise into the third round of the tournament while Dan Evans suffered a defeat at the hands of Stan Wawrinka.
Konta was able to win the match against the Taiwanese opponent Su-Wei Hsieh by 6-0 and 6-2 as he saved all her 12 break points.
This is Konta’s third straight win over Hsieh in their previous three meetings, having won at the 2017’s Wimbledon and one in Rome back in 2018.
Although Johanna Konta has progressed further into the tournament, the Briton Dan Evans suffered a defeat against Stan Wawrinka by 6-7, 6-3 and 6-3 in math that lasted for over 2 hours.
Wawrinka said that after reaching the title final of the Rotterdam Open in 2017, he has been feeling more confident which the year when he had his knee surgery.
The former world rank no. 3 Wawrinka said to media, “it was great to make it into the final there and win those matches against some top players. Today was also a great match in tough conditions and against a tough opponent.”
Up next, Wawrinka will be playing against Marton Fucsovics who had earlier been defeated two times by 39 years old Wawrinka.
On the other hand, Tomas Berdych suffered the first round defeat at the tournament by 7-6 and 7-6 at the hands of Feliciano Lopez.
As for the women’s event, Serena Williams defeated her opponent Victoria Azarenka by 7-5 and 6-3 in two hours long match. Williams talking about Azarenka said, “I truly love her, she is a good friend of mine. She is also a fellow mom and a former world no. 1, just like me. It is hard to play against someone who you know so well but at the same time it’s also very cool and invigorating.”
Other players like second seed Simona Halep, sixth-ranked sixth-ranked Elina Svitolina, Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, Belgian Elise Mertens and 18-year-old Bianca Andreescu have all progressed into the third round of the tournament on Friday.
