The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has recently announced a series of changes in their tennis format for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Under these changes, the men’s single for the gold medal match will be played as the best-of-three tie break sets instead of the previous best of five sets. This change has been aligned with other matches of the men’s and women’s event which will now also be played as best of three tie break sets.
Since 1996 all the matches of the men’s singles tennis at the Olympics have been played under best-of-three format expect the final match. However, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the matches will now be played over a shorter format.
Andy Murray of Great Britain has been the back to back champion for the men’s singles tennis Olympic event. He won the title back in 2012’s London Olympics after defeating Roger Federer. He later defended his title by defeating Juan Martin Del Potro at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
