DeGale said, “today is the day of the 10 year anniversary of my boxing debut since 28th February 2009. This is the day that I am now announcing my retirement from the boxing. It has been an unbelievable journey and I had an amazing decade. If I am completely honest, these were the best years of my life. It is hard for me to admit that I am not the fighter that I once used to be. However, I am a human and the years of injuries have taken a hard toll on me, both mentally and physically. These are the things that have impacted on my performance in the ring. I lost my fight on Saturday at The O2 but I am also touched to have a good send off from my fans.”
