Khabib Nurmagomedov received congratulations from Russian president Vladimir Putin in person after retaining his UFC lightweight title in his fight against Conor McGregor despite the fight being overshadowed by Khabib’s post-game brawl.
Khabib and his father slash coach Abdulmanap were received personally by Putin in Ulyanovsk a place near the banks of Volga River.
Nurmagomedov after winning the fight leaped out off octagon and rushed towards McGregor’s sparring partner Dillion Danis at the end. Three of the Khabib’s teammates was arrested by later released. However, Khabib himself faces a long suspension from UFC.
Khabib in his meeting with Putin told him that he is sorry for losing control but he had enough with McGregor and his teammates insulting his father and his country. Putin gave a lecture to Nurmagomedov about his behavior but then acknowledged that his win was one-sided with words that “You won worthily and convincingly”.
Putin also told Khabib that a Russian man must keep his restraints when living in Russia which is “a big family” but when slandered and attacked from outside they must retaliate.
Putin said, “In a family, anything can happen and we do not allow ourselves to go beyond certain limits. However, if we are attacked from outside, of course not only you but all of us will jump in the same way as you did. They won’t know what hit them”.
Still, Putin cautioned Nurmagomedov by saying that, “it is better to not take thing so far”.
