Koepka ‘rang Woods first’ over PGA Tour return

Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka has revealed that Tiger Woods was the very first person he contacted when he began considering a return to the PGA Tour, following his departure from LIV Golf. The American golfer admitted that the decision was not taken lightly and came with a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and nerves.

Koepka was one of the highest-profile players to defect to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series in 2022, drawn by its lucrative contracts and alternative format. However, after spending two seasons on the breakaway tour, the 35-year-old officially exited LIV Golf in December, despite still having one year remaining on his contract.

His release opened the door to a potential return to the PGA Tour, something Koepka said he had always kept in the back of his mind. The process began almost immediately.

“I think it was the 23rd of December when I was officially released,” Koepka explained. “I called Tiger right away, and that’s really when everything started moving.”

Koepka has now rejoined the PGA Tour through its returning member programme, a pathway designed to reintegrate players who had previously left the circuit. As he prepares to tee it up again on familiar ground, Koepka admitted to feeling nervous ahead of his first PGA Tour appearance since his return, which comes at this week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Despite his success and experience, Koepka acknowledged that coming back felt like stepping into unknown territory.

“It was exciting, but at the same time I honestly didn’t really know what to do,” he said. “There were a lot of emotions. It’s not something you deal with every day.”

Turning to Tiger Woods was a natural step. Koepka has long spoken of his respect for Woods, both as a competitor and as a figure who understands the pressures and politics of professional golf better than almost anyone.

“I’ve always had a good relationship with Tiger,” Koepka said. “Once I had the opportunity to get reinstated, that was exactly what I wanted to do, and he was the first person who came to mind.”

Woods, who remains one of the most influential voices in the sport, has been deeply involved in discussions surrounding the future of professional golf amid the ongoing division caused by LIV’s emergence. His perspective and advice, Koepka suggested, were invaluable during a moment of transition.

Koepka’s decision to leave LIV Golf comes at a time when the global golf landscape remains fractured. While LIV offered financial security and a reduced schedule, critics argued it lacked the competitive depth and historical prestige of the PGA Tour. For Koepka, the pull of traditional tournaments, legacy, and competitive structure ultimately proved stronger.

Though Koepka enjoyed moments of success on LIV, including team victories and consistent performances, he admitted that something was missing.

“There’s just a different feeling playing PGA Tour events,” he hinted. “The history, the venues, the competition—it’s what I grew up wanting to be part of.”

Torrey Pines, the venue for Koepka’s return, is no ordinary stop. The iconic course has hosted major championships and countless memorable moments, making it a fitting stage for his comeback. Yet Koepka admitted that returning brings pressure as well as motivation.

“You don’t know how people are going to react,” he said. “You don’t know how it’s going to feel walking back inside the ropes. That’s where the nerves come from.”

Despite those nerves, Koepka remains one of the most accomplished golfers of his generation. With five major titles, he has proven time and again that he thrives on the biggest stages. His reputation as a formidable competitor, particularly in majors, remains intact.

The PGA Tour, for its part, appears eager to welcome established stars back into the fold, especially as negotiations continue over golf’s future governance. Koepka’s return could signal a broader shift, with other LIV players potentially reconsidering their paths.

While Koepka stopped short of speculating about others following him, his move may serve as a precedent. His decision underscores the enduring appeal of the PGA Tour, even amid financial temptations elsewhere.

For now, Koepka’s focus is firmly on the present. He insists that his goal is not to prove a point, but simply to play competitive golf at the highest level once again.

“I’m just happy to be back,” he said. “I’m excited to compete and see where my game is.”

Calling Tiger Woods, he added, was about grounding himself during a pivotal moment.

“When you’re unsure, you reach out to people you trust,” Koepka said. “Tiger’s been there, done it all. Hearing his perspective meant a lot.”

As Koepka steps back onto the PGA Tour, all eyes will be on how he adapts and whether his return marks a new chapter—not just for his career, but for professional golf as a whole.
