Lasith Malinga leads Sri Lanka to win over England in a shocking match at Headingley as he grabbed hold of four wickets.
England was looking for an easy victory after they held their opponents at 232-9 at the end of the 50 overs inning.
However, Sri Lanka’s ace in hole Lasith Malinga got 4 wickets by giving away ere 42 runs as he rolled the English team at 212 runs to grab hold of a 20-run win.
Ben Stokes made a valiant attempt to redeem his team from a tough spot as he scored 82 runs off 89 balls but his efforts proved to be in vain as Sri Lanka won the match with 3 overs to spare.
This is the 2nd defeat for England in this world cup and this has placed their hopes for qualifying in the semis at a tough place. On the other hand, Sari Lanka’s chances to qualify for the semis seem pretty much alive at the time.
Sri Lanka has been dreaded with loss of wickets in their batting orders during their previous matches but still, they decided to bat first in the match after winning the toss. This costed them dearly at the start after their openers were bowled out after mere 14 balls.
The first one to go was the Captain of Si Lanka Dimuth Karunaratne at 1 run by Jofra Archer who got 2 wickets while giving away 52 runs. The 2nd one from Sri Lankan team to be sent out was Kusal Perera who scored mere 2 runs before getting caught out on delivery from Chris Woakes.
Next came Avishka Fernando, for whom this was his first tournament appearance, who gave a hard time to the English bowlers with his powerplay.
Avishka Fernando managed to score 49 runs off of 39 balls as he scored 14 runs in an over by Archer. He shared 59 runs partnership with Kusal Menids before falling victim to the bowling of Mark Wood.
