Madrid Open; Dominic Thiem beats Roger Federer and sets up the semi-final against Novak Djokovic

Dominic Thiem was able to win over Roger Federer in the last 8-match on Friday after he saved two match points on Friday at Madrid Open.

With this win at the red dirt clay court of La Caja Magica, Thiem managed to defeat Federer by 3-6, 7-6 and 6-4 to make it to his third Madrid Open final in a row.

Federer had a superb start of the game in the opening set as he gained a 3-0 lead to ultimately close the set in his favor after 29 minutes.

Thiem manages dot make a comeback in the 2nd set to force a decider on Federer.

Thiem had a positive start in the decider but Federer responded to make it 4-4. Soon the 25 years old managed to close the match after 2 hours and 10 minutes to set a semifinals match against Novak Djokovic.

The top-seeded player Novak Djokovic got to the semis of the Madrid Open after his opponent of the last 8 match Marin Cilic retired due to food poisoning. Cilic said that he had a rough night and won’t be able to play against the world no. 1 Novak.

Djokovic is seeking to win his third title of Madrid Open and his 2nd for the season after he won the Australian Open as he now battles it out with Thiem.

In other high profile matches of the day, Rafael Nadal managed to present an impressive clay court game as he defeated Stan Wawrinka by 6-1 and 6-2.

Wawrinka was not able to face superb rally from Nadal who will now play against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semis.

Tsitsipas, who had earlier been defeated by Nadal at the Australian Open, set the match after defeating Alexander Zverev by 7-5, 3-6 and 6-2.
