Madrid Open; Simona Halep wins over Belinda Bencic to make it to the final

The world no. 3, Simona Halep managed to win over Belinda a Bencic on Friday to make it to her record 4th Madrid Open final.

Halep defeated Bencic by 6-2, 6-7 and 6-0. She will be able to move to the top of the WTA rankings if she defeats Kiki Bertens on the Saturday’s final.

Halep said, “It is a nice feeling to be finally back in the final of this amazing tournament. I am really happy to be playing here once again. In the second set during the tie break, I was rushing too much. I lost control of the game but then I calmed myself down and told myself that I had to start the match again. I started to play smarter from thereon. I opened up the court more and I played a little more aggressive.”

Halep managed to win the opening set in a superb performance in a mere 27 minutes. As for the second set, it was Bencic who won it to force a decider.

However, the 22 years old Swiss, Bencic had struggled on the court and after being three games down, she appeared to be emotional. Halep managed to win the set with a bagel.

As for the 7th seeded Kiki Bertens, this will be her consecutive second appearance in the Madrid Open final who earlier managed to gain revenge over Petra Kvitova and later defeated Sloane Stephens by 6-2 and 7-5 on Friday.
