Madrid Open; Kiki Bertens defeats world no. 1 Simona Halep to lift the title

Kiki Bertens in her Madrid Open Final’s match against the reigning world champion Simona Halep denied the two times winner of the tournament to win her career’s first b9ggest title.

27 years old Bertens has become the only female payer in the tournament’s history to have won the title without dropping a single set. She managed to defeat Simona Halep who overcame the former world no. 1 Naomi Osaka by 6-4 and 6-4.

With this win, there is going to be a major shift in the world rankings as Bertens becomes the first ever Dutchwoman to be the world no. 4.

In the opening match, Halep had an early lead of 2-4 which Bertens soon overcome by winning four consecutive games to win the first set.

Bertens had earlier defeated Halep in the Cincinnati Open last year.  During the second set’s start, Bertens broke the Romanian world no. 1 to win the first game.

As for Halep, she soon seemed to break Bertens after winning three games in a row but she ultimately got devoid of her serve for the 5th time in the match.

Soon Bertens was able to break the mounted up pressure from Halep after she saved the third match point on her serve to seal the victory.
