The Spanish Super Cup final held between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid ended with Real Madrid winning the Cup. Real Madrid is the first team to win the new format Spanish Super Cup that was held for the first time in Saudi Arabia despite facing criticism from the human rights groups.
Madrid was able to win the Spanish Super Cup by 4-1 following their late shootout after the final had ended 0-0 but additional time was given. All the spot kickers from Real Madrid side Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos scored goals on their sot kicks respectively for Real Madrid.
As for Saul Ñíguez of Atlético Madrid, he missed his first penalty shot and then the second attempt by Thomas Partey was splendidly blocked by Real Madrid goalkeeper named Thibaut Courtois. Only Kieran Trippier was able to convert his penalty kick into a goal for Atlético’s only goal of the night.
Courtois said, “I had studied the penalty takes of Atlético’s players earlier. I was aware as t where Thomas was going to shoot at. It was a great save because he had struck it really hard.”
Real Madrid played the final 5 minutes of the Spanish Super Cup final with only 10 men in the added time after their player Federico Valverde was given a direct red card for his foul on Álvaro Morata.
Diego Simone, the coach for Atlético Madrid said, “The most important play of this whole game was the play by Valverde who stopped our payers from having the chance which could have made the decider. He won the whole match.”
For Atlético this was another loss for them in the final of a tournament against their bitter rivals. Madrid had previously defeated Atlético back at the final of 2016’s Champions League on penalties and they all won in the extra time during the final of 2014’s Champions League. The only renege that Atlético claimed against Real Madrid for these losses was the win at the final of 2018’s European Super Cup.
