Munich Open; Garin beats Zverev to claim his career’s 1st top-10 win

Cristian Garin was able to save 2 match points before he managed to beat the two-time defending champion Alexander Zverev by 6-4, 5-7 and 7-5 to make it into the quarterfinals of the Munich Open during their Friday’s match.

Garin, who is currently ranked world no. 47, claimed his career’s first win over a world top 1-ranked player.

He might have gotten this win a little sooner if he had not squandered his 3 match points during the second set.

The 22 years old Grain was still able to make a comeback from being a break down to win the final set and win the match in a little over 2 hours at the outdoor clay court.

As for Zverev, with this loss, he is now fallen back to world rank no. 4 with Roger Federer being the world rank no. 3 when the rankings get sorted out on Monday. As for Federer, he will be playing at the Madrid Masters starting next week.

With this win, Cristian Garin will now play against Marco Cecchinato who made a late rally to win over Hungarian opponent Matron Fucsovics by 1-6, 7-5, and 7-5.

Earlier in the tournament, Matteo Berrettini won over the 3 times champion of the tournament Philipp Kohlschreiber by 4-6, 7-5, and 6-4. He will next be playing against the 4th seeded payer Roberto Bautista Agut who won over Guido Pella by 4-6, 6-4, and 6-0.
