Morocco Open; Johanna Konta loses her first clay-court final of the career in Rabat

Johanna Konta, the British no. 1 player lost her Morocco Finals match against Maria Sakkari by 2-6, 6-4 and 6-1 on Saturday. Konta was bidding to win her first final of the clay court career.

As for Maria, this is her first ever WTA singles title win of the career and she gained it by making a comeback from being a set down and break Konta in the two sets.

Britain’s no 1 was making her appearance of the court for her first win of the tournament in the last 2 years. 27 years old was able to win the first set easily and also gain a 4-2 lead early in the 2nd set.

However, the 6th seeded Maria made a comeback as he broke Konta twice and sealed the second set with a 6-4 win. Sakkari was then on fire as she improved her game further to win the decider by 6-1 as well as her career’ first title.

With this victory, Sakkari is surely going to climb up into at least top 50 of the world rankings when they are released on Monday.

As for Konta, this was her first final appearance since the last year’s Nottingham. Along with this, she had 4 victories this week which makes it the first time that she has been able to claim 2 main draw wins on a clay court.
