Mutua Madrid Open; Fabio Fognini ousts Kyle Edmund in yet another clay court event

Kyle Edmund, the British no., 1 player suffered another agonizing defeat on the clay court as he got defeated by Fabio Fognini during the opening round match at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Edmund has earlier suffered three first-round exits at the clay court of the season. He once again defeated at the opener match of a clay court event by 6-4 and 6-3 in 1 hour and 30 minutes against the 10th ranked Italian payer.

For Edmund, this was a tough match against the highly trained Fognini who was coming high on his title win of the Monte Carlo Masters last month.

Edmund, in the opening set, had chances to make a lead but after recovering from an early break, he was never able to beat the Italian who had earlier defeated him by five sets in the last summer’s French Open.

As for Edmund, he will now be moving to Rome next week for a chance to win at the Roland Garros.

In other matches of the event, the 2-time champion of the event Novak Djokovic managed to cruise into the third round match after defeating Taylor Fritz by 6-4 and 6-2 in 1 hour 4 minutes.

As for Stan Wawrinka, his losing streak of 3 matches finally ended after he beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert by 6-2 and 6-3.

As for the Brazil Open winner Guido Pella, he defeated the 12th seeded player Daniil Medvedev by 6-2, 1-6 and 6-3.

Roger Federer also made a winning run on the clay court as he defeated Richard Gasquet by 6-2 and 6-3.

Federer, who was playing on a clay court for the first time since 2016, needed only 1 hour to defeat Gasquet easily to reach the third round of the Madrid Open which he last won back in 2012.
