Mutua Madrid Open; Simona Halep beats Johanna Konta

The British no. 1 Johanna Konta failed to capitalize on her fine start on the clay court season as she got defeated by Simona Halep in the second round match of the Mutua Madrid Open.

It seems as if the heavy schedule has finally caught up to Johanna Konta after having reached the final and winning the WTA Toru event of Rabat last week. She also rushed to the Spanish capital where she won the first round match against Alison Riske easily.

However, during her match with Halep, Konta who was on her way to victory with a splendid opening set fell down dramatically due to fatigue. She ultimately lost the match against the French Open champion by 7-5 and 6-1.

Konta, in her career, has only managed to ever defeat a Top 10 ranked player on a clay court but in this game, she came close to the victory as she led the first set by 5-2.

She could not hold on to her lead and Halep, the champion of 2016 and 2017 was ultimately able to gain two set points. Konta managed to save those first but then Halep gained a fifth set point.

Halep, the world rank no. 3 managed to put her foot on peddle during the second set while Konta was only able to get two points in the first 4 games.

Ultimately, the Romanian was able to clinch the victory after an 88 minutes long match.
