Netherlands wins over Sweden by 1-0 to set Women’s World Cup Final against US

After Jackie Groenen recovered the ball despite being outside of the penalty area, the midfield of Netherlands knew that she had to capture this amazing opportunity.

This was the 99th minute of the gruesome semifinals match for the Women’s World Cup and by that point, neither Sweden nor Netherlands had scored a goal.

Jackie Groenen said, “I saw a nice angle after I had the ball and we have been discussing our play for many weeks now and that I need to take more shots. The ball came to me really nicely and then I thought, let’s do it then.”

A passing sequence allowed Jackie Groenen to drive the ball past the Swedish goalkeeper as Jackie Groenen scored her first goal of this tournament and to lead Netherlands victory.

Jackie Groenen said, “I am not that much of soccer but I am really glad that I made the shot and scored a goal.”

With this win, Netherlands will now move into the finals where they will face the US in a match that will be held on Sunday at the State de Lyon for the Women’s World Cup title.

This final’s match is now going to be purely of woman as team US is being coached by Jill Ellis and Netherlands team being coached by Wiegman. This puts an end to three World Cup finals which had been played by teams with male coaches.

Wiegman said, “It is very important that women get a chance to develop as players and coaches in the society.”
