Novak Djokovic is back to being the world no. 1 for the men’s tennis game after two years absence from the rank.
However, his return to the men’s tennis game as the world no. 1 is rather ironic. He was able to get the rank after his longtime rival in the game; Rafael Nadal had to withdraw from the last weeks Paris Masters after contracting abdominal strain.
Djokovic had been pushed to his limits against Rafael Nadal in a five sets thriller match at the Wimbledon’s semi finals. The match overlapped for two days. The match was the 52nd meeting of their careers and Djokovic ended up winning it. After the match, he said, “I am just overwhelmed. It is very special. It was very clear that very few things actually set us apart. This is the kind of a match you live for and you work for”.
His final opponent for the 2018’s Wimbledon was Kevin Anderson who was emotionally and physically drained from his previous challenges and did not stand a chance against Djokovic. Finally, Djokovic ended up inning is the first Grand Slam after two years. The highlight of the moment was Djokovic’s son Stefan in the Centre Court box watching his father lifting the Wimbledon trophy and giving the speech.
Djokovic was expected to fight for the world no 1 rank with Nadal in Paris Masters but Spaniard ended up withdrawing at the last moment.
Now despite missing out the chance to win his fifth title for the 2018 season, Djokovic is content that he has reached the height of this sport.
He said, “Reflecting on what I have been through this whole year, I consider this a phenomenal achievement”.
