Penguins do a pregame ceremony for honoring ‘synagogue’ shooting victims

On Tuesday night, the NHL team Pittsburgh Penguins held a ceremony for the deceased victims of the ‘synagogue’ shooting incident in Squirrel Hill; the neighbored hood in Pittsburgh.

Before the Penguins vs. New York Islanders game ended in the defeat for the Penguins by 6-3, Penguins held an 11 second moment of silence in memory of the 11 victims who lost their lives in the shooting incident at the ‘Tree of Life’ Synagogue.

Other than this moment of silence, the Penguins team members all wore the same special patch which had printed on it words, “Stronger than hate”. This patch also had the team logo along with David Star. New York Islanders players also wore the same decal but on their helmets.

In the pregame ceremony, a black and white silhouette with words written “Stoner than Hate” also flashed on the scoreboard. A video tribute also played before the faceoff of the teams.

For the ceremonial puck drop, Pittsburgh police chief Scott Schubert along with the two wounded officers from the incident; Anthony Burke and Mike Smigda were present.

To top it off, all the jerseys of the Penguins players have been signed and will be up for auction in order to raise money for the families of the victims.

The franchise also held a blood drive as well as donated heavily to the “Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh” and a fund established by the Pittsburgh City’s Department of Safety which helps the officers wounded in service.
