Novak Djokovic, in his preparation for the upcoming Australian Open, suffered a surprise defeat against his Qatar Open opponent Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinals of the tournament.
The current world no. 1 suffered his defeat in a high-quality match for the first time in his new year’s season which lasted for more than 2 hours. Novak Djokovic lost by 6-3, 6-7 and 6-4.
Djokovic’s opponent, the world ranked no. 24, the Spaniard lost his first set of the week but still managed to get back in the decider to cause a huge upset in the tournament.
For Bautista Agut to gain the victory he needed but one match point and now he will either play against Tomas Berdych or Marco Cecchinato for the final of the Qatar Open.
Agut talking about his win said, “I am going to remember this match for the rest of my life. I cannot be happier than I am right now.”
This is the second time that Bautista Agut has defeated Djokovic and both of these wins were in the semi-finals.
The first win of Agut against Djokovic was back in October of 2016 at the Shanghai Masters where Djokovic was also playing as world rank no. 1.
