Earlier last Saturday, nearly 6 fans got injured as a result of the lightning strikes that struck the grounds of the East Lake Golf Club in between the third round of the Tour Championship.
According to the statement released by the PGA Tour, the 6 fans that got injured due to falling debris from the lightning strike on a tree were treated by the emergency medical team. The fans after the initial treatment were then transported to hospital for further medical treatment. According to Tour officials, the injuries of none of these 6 fans are life-threatening.
The third-round play was halted and was resumed on Sunday morning.
The lighting strikes shook the ground at about 4:45 pm on Saturday afternoon and following these strikes few ambulances came to the scene.
The vice president for the PGA Tour, Mark Russell said that one of the strikes hit the maintenance area while the 2nd one struck a tee located near the 16th hole.
Due to this, the play was suspended for about 30 minutes and after the fans were littered all across the golf course, the play was suspended on the grounds of bad weather.
Russell said, “We suspended the play and put on the scoreboard that bad weather was approaching and for asking people to leave the golf course or take shelter. However, most of the times people do not do as per the need of the moment.”
