Spurs open talks to sign Liverpool’s Robertson
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Tottenham Hotspur have initiated discussions with Liverpool regarding a potential move for left-back Andy Robertson, who is set to become a free agent at Anfield in the summer. Robertson, 31, recently revealed that he remains uncertain about his next steps, having started just four Premier League matches this season. The Scotland international is keen to secure regular playing time ahead of the World Cup, which makes the prospect of a move increasingly appealing.

BBC Sport has reported that Spurs have made a formal approach to Liverpool for Robertson, though at this stage no agreement has been reached between the clubs. The Premier League side are exploring options as part of a broader strategy to strengthen their squad depth in the left-back position. Tottenham’s interest in Robertson comes amid a reshuffling of personnel at Anfield, where Jurgen Klopp’s successor, Arne Slot, has been managing squad rotation and integrating summer signings into the starting XI.

Robertson has been a stalwart at Liverpool since his arrival from Hull City in 2017 for £8 million. During his six-year tenure at Anfield, the left-back has been a near-constant presence, amassing 363 appearances across all competitions. He has played a key role in the club’s domestic and European successes, collecting nine major trophies, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League medal. His most recent appearance came as a substitute in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Burnley on 17 January.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has publicly acknowledged Robertson’s importance to the club. Despite losing his starting spot to summer signing Milos Kerkez, Robertson has handled the situation professionally, demonstrating leadership and a team-first mentality. Slot praised Robertson for his attitude and the way he has coped with reduced minutes, noting that the 31-year-old remains a respected figure in the squad.

If Robertson were to leave, Liverpool’s depth at left-back would be limited. Hungary international Milos Kerkez currently serves as the only senior left-back available to Slot, although it is understood that Liverpool may consider recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma to provide cover. The club will likely weigh all options carefully, as the departure of Robertson would leave a notable gap in experience and leadership, particularly in high-pressure matches in both domestic and European competitions.

Tottenham, meanwhile, recently strengthened their left-back options by completing the signing of Brazilian defender Souza. Despite this addition, Spurs’ left-back position has been affected by injuries. Destiny Udogie has emerged as the preferred starter under manager Thomas Frank, with Djed Spence providing additional cover. Ben Davies, who would have been another senior option, suffered a broken ankle on Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season. The potential arrival of Robertson would bolster Tottenham’s options considerably, providing both Premier League experience and international pedigree.

Robertson’s ambition to secure regular first-team football is understandable given the proximity of the 2026 World Cup. Maintaining match fitness and competitive sharpness is critical for a player of his caliber as he prepares to represent Scotland on football’s biggest stage. A move to Tottenham could offer him the opportunity to play consistently while contributing to a club with European ambitions and a competitive squad in the Premier League.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Robertson also reflects a broader trend among top Premier League clubs, who are looking to acquire experienced players who can immediately impact the team while mentoring younger talents. Robertson’s leadership, tactical awareness, and crossing ability are attributes that would be highly valuable in the north London side’s system, particularly as they aim to maintain defensive solidity while offering width in attack.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the club will need to balance the desire to honor Robertson’s service with the practicalities of squad planning. Slot’s management team must decide whether to allow a senior player to leave on a free transfer or explore potential compensation if an agreement is reached. Meanwhile, integrating younger players and summer signings remains a priority, and the club must ensure that defensive consistency is maintained throughout the remainder of the season.

Robertson’s legacy at Liverpool is significant. He has been instrumental in Klopp-era successes, forming a vital partnership on the left flank and consistently contributing defensively and offensively. His crossing ability, stamina, and leadership qualities have been praised by teammates, coaches, and pundits alike. As Liverpool continue to compete on multiple fronts this season, the potential departure of Robertson represents a key decision point for both the player and the club.

Tottenham’s interest signals the growing demand for proven, experienced left-backs capable of performing at the highest level. If the transfer goes through, Robertson would bring Champions League experience, Premier League know-how, and leadership to a Spurs squad that is contending for domestic and European honors. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s decision will hinge on squad management, potential replacements, and the balance between short-term results and long-term planning.

As the Premier League season progresses, both clubs will face important decisions regarding squad rotation, injury management, and tactical flexibility. Robertson’s situation is emblematic of modern football’s challenges, where veteran players must balance loyalty to their current club with personal ambitions, particularly in years that precede major international tournaments. The coming weeks will likely determine whether Robertson continues his career at Anfield or takes on a new challenge in north London with Tottenham.

Liverpool travel to Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday, with Robertson having traveled with the squad despite uncertainty over his future. Whether he features on the pitch remains to be seen, but the ongoing negotiations highlight the potential for one of the Premier League’s most experienced left-backs to make a significant move during the January transfer window.

The situation will continue to attract attention from fans, media, and football pundits alike, as Robertson’s decision could influence not only Liverpool’s defensive setup but also Tottenham’s strategic ambitions in the transfer market. With both clubs vying for results domestically and preparing for future campaigns, the outcome of these discussions will have ramifications that extend well beyond the immediate transfer window.
