US Open; Novak Djokovic makes a winning start at the Flushing Meadows

The defending champion and the world rank no. 1 also the no. 1 seed of the US Open, Novak Djokovic was able to make a winning start of the US Open held at Flushing Meadows. He is on the quest for winning his career’s 17th Grand Slam title and stays true on this goal by defeating Roberto Carballes Baena by 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4 in the first round match.

32 years old Djokovic has lately been on a roll of winning Grand Slam titles as he won 4 of the last 5 Grand Slam titles and is now only 2 titles shy of tying with Rafael Nadal and 4 far from tying with Roger Federer.

After winning the Wimbledon earlier this year, Djokovic has played only one other hardcourt tournament which was the Cincinnati Masters, where he got defeated in semifinals against the eventual winner Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev, if stays on winning track, will be the projected opponent for Djokovic in the quarterfinals as he defeated India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran by 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2.

From Britain’s side, Dan Evans made a winning start to his US Open campaign as he defeated Adrian Mannarino by 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, and 6-3

. Another British player Cameron Norrie fought a hard battle against his opponent Gregoire Barriere in the 5-set match but got defeated narrowly by 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-7, and 7-6.

In other matches of the day, American player Riley Opelka, the giant with 6 feet 11 inches height, defeated the 11th seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy by 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 and 6-3.
