Venus Williams and Simona Halep beaten at China Open

Former top-ranking players Venus Williams and Romania’s Simona Halep both got beaten at the second round of the China Open.

Williams was playing her 2nd round match against Belinda Bencic, the 9th seed of the tournament who defeated her by 3-6, 6-3 and 7-5. Bencic was able to save 2 match points during the final set to beat the 7-time grand slam champion Williams despite her making 40 unforced errors. Bencic will now face the winner of the match between Petra Kvitova, the 3rd seed of the event and Kristina Mladenovic.

As for the reigning champion of the Wimbledon, Simona Halep of Romania, she was playing the 2nd round match against Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrovam.

Alexandrovam was able to beat Halep by 6-2 and 6-3 to gain her career’s 2nd win against Top 10 ranking player. Romanian was nursing back to health from the injury she suffered last week at the Wuhan Open which forced her to retire from the event.

Halep said of her defeat, “It was really tough today. I was not able to recover from my first match. This is why it was really tough for me to play and my opponent played really well. As for the injury I suffered in Wuhan, it is getting worse by the day. I need to go back to home and have an MRI scan as well as take some break and have the treatment done.”

In other matches, Caroline Wozniacki, the defending champion of the tournament was able to defeat her American opponent Lauren Davis by 6-1 and 6-3. Caroline Wozniacki, the former world rank no. 1 will now face another American opponent named Christina McHale.

As for Bianca Andreescu of Canada, since her winning the US open and playing her match, she was able to beat her Belarusian opponent Aliaksandra Sasnovitch by 6-2, 2-6 and 6-1.

Andreescu said of her win, “I am on a roll right now. I hope that I can keep it up because it gives me a lot of courage and confidence.”
