Afghanistan’s teenage batsman Ikram Alikhil scored a smashing 86 runs before West Indies sped up their efforts to win the match by 23-run in a match held at Headingley.
18 years old Alikhil shared the 23d wicket partnership with Rahmat shah for 133 runs as the Afghani team held on to their best to score 312 runs chase target but fell short on the target by scoring 288 runs off of their 50 allotted overs.
With this result, Afghanistan has ended its world cup campaign without winning the match despite having their best ODI batting score to be the second best in this world cup. As for Windies, they ended their streak of 6 losses with this win.
Afghanistan was hoping for a memorable victory in this match and all seemed according to the pan early on in the match after the bowler of Afghanistan; Dawlat Zadran took the wicket of Windies best batsman Chris Gayle.
Gayle was in need of mere 18 runs in order to become the top ODI scorer of Windies of all time but he had to pay the price for chasing the mark so eagerly by losing his wicket.
Shai Hope who scored 77 runs fell victim to fast bowling of Rashid Kahn along with Evin Lewis wicket who scored 58 runs.
Shimron Hetmyer who scored 39 runs took the deliveries of Mohammad Nabi for two sixes but it was not long before Dawlat also took his wicket.
As for Afghanistan’s loss in this match, it was mainly caused by their subpar fielding as evident from Nicholas Pooran getting lives on his 9 and 12 reviews as he shared a 105 runs partnership with Jason Holder.
In the batting innings for Afghanistan, it was Mohammad Nabi whose wicket fell to a fast bowler of Windies but then both Ikram and Rahmat replied the bowlers with their array of shots.
The first major breakthrough for Windies arrived after Rahmat was ousted after scoring 57 runs. With Afghanistan at 189-3, they only needed 123 runs off of their remaining 15 overs. However, form that point on, Windies improved their fielding, as well as bowlers, tried their best to hold off runs form Afghani batsmen that led to an easy victory for them.
