For the past few years; England cricket team selectors had a headache as to who can be the opening partner for the batsman Alastair Cook.
Now there is a new problem for Ed Smith and co from the English Cricket Selection board and that is the search of replacement for Alastair Cook himself. The problem arise when Alastair Cook; the former captain of the English Cricket team made a decision of retiring from Test Cricket.
This is a very dire situation for the board as they have to come up with a solution rather very quickly because England is set to fly off for Sir Lanka on the very start of their winter tour. The winter tour of England’s team starts in juts a matter of weeks.
So the question is what option does England has in a attempt to fill out the massive void left by the retirement of their record Test run scorer?
One option is to promote one of the best batsmen from the existing batting line up for match against Sri Lanka and after that against West Indies in 2019.
Another option is Joe Root who performed slightly better opening partner for Cook at the Ashes Series.
After this it leaves England with only two batsmen slash wicketkeepers; Joe Butler and Jonny Barstow. Both of them had a resounding success in their test career.
The traditional selection method for the English team has been dispelled after the joining of Smith as a national selector earlier this year.
21 years old Cook was selected as a replacement for Marcus Trescothick when he left on a short notice and that decision certainly paid out well for England. The problem today is that there are now many new batsmen that are knocking hard on the doors of selectors. Among these up and coming batsmen; Haseeb Hameed is the brightest and the most viable option who has performed well in his tour to India two years ago.
Well there are many options for replacement of Alastair Cook but England needs their next Cook to ensure their strong hand at the test grounds.
