Wout Poels of Sky team was able to gain victory on the sixth stage of Tour of Britain this Friday. Julian Alaphilippe is on overall lead with his second place finish.
Poels; the Dutchman was able to sprint pass Alaphilippe and Hugh Carthy to reach finish line at the summit finish line of Whinlatter Pass. The timing of his attack was perfect.
Alaphilippe of the Quick Step Floors was able to remain the fifth leader in this six days racing event after Primoz Roglic lost his green jersey on final day’s climb.
Alaphilippe told media that, “I ma really proud of my team’s performance today. They were incredible. Everybody on my team was riding for my sake and protecting me. Most of all Bob really fought for me. My only target was to ride for taking the jersey. In the fight for getting victory, Wout was actually fresher than me. This is why I am not disappointed to finish second.”
In the overall standings, Poels has moved up to second falling behind only 17 second to Alaphilippe. However he also admitted that the race following on weekend will be quite a struggle for his whole team.
Poels told media that, “being second is really nice too. I am happy and content with it. Next is going to be a really hard fight. There are not going to be any uphill finishes. Everything is going to be flat from here on now. But we will be trying our best.”
