WTA Finals in Singapore; Elina Svitolina claims the title

Elina Svitolina; the world no. 7 managed to win the title for the WTA Finals in Singapore, which is the biggest title of her career yet.

The Ukrainian player managed to win the final against American player Sloane Stephens by 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2 in a long two hours and 23 minutes match.

Apart from winning the title, Elina has also become the first female player since Serena Williams to win all of her matches at the WTA Finals. Serena did the feat back in 2013.

24 years old Elina managed to win against the defending champion Carolina Wozniacki, Czech players Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova in the group stages before she managed to reach the final after defeating Kiki Bertens in the semi finals.

In the opening set, Svitolina approached a sluggish start but in the remaining two sets she managed to gain the attacking approach to secure her win.

With this win she has managed to win nine straight finals and can possibly ride up to three spots and to the Fourth rank in the world rankings.

 

Svitolina talked to media and said, “It is indeed a very special moment for me. I played great tennis this week. This is going to bring a lot of confidence for me.”

With this the fiver year run of the tournament in Singapore comes to an end. Now the season finale will move to Shenzhen in 2019.
