Yamal misses penalty as Girona stun Barca in derby

Barcelona missed a golden opportunity to reclaim top spot in La Liga after suffering a dramatic and emotionally charged defeat in the Catalan derby against Girona. In a match filled with controversy, missed chances, and late drama, Hansi Flick’s side fell short as a late goal handed Girona all three points at Estadio Montilivi.

The defining moment of the evening came in the 86th minute when substitute Fran Beltran struck decisively to secure a 2-1 victory for the hosts. The result leaves Barcelona two points behind their fierce rivals Real Madrid in the title race, significantly denting their hopes of regaining control at the summit of Spanish football.

Barcelona’s frustrations were compounded by a controversial sequence leading up to the winning goal. In the build-up, the visitors believed defender Jules Kounde had been fouled. However, after a brief consultation with the video assistant referee (VAR), the referee allowed the goal to stand. The decision sparked protests from Barcelona players and staff, but ultimately it proved decisive.

Despite Girona being reduced to 10 men in stoppage time, Barcelona were unable to find an equaliser. Substitute Joel Roca was shown a red card after a reckless, lunging tackle on Lamine Yamal deep into added time. Yet even with a numerical advantage in the closing moments, the visitors failed to break through Girona’s resolute defense.

This defeat marks Barcelona’s third league loss to their regional rivals and extends a worrying run of form. It is now their second consecutive defeat across all competitions, following a heavy 4-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final just days earlier. The back-to-back setbacks have raised concerns at a crucial stage of the season.

From the opening whistle, the intensity of a derby encounter was evident. Girona showed no fear against the league leaders, pressing aggressively and forcing Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia into action within the first minute. The home side’s intent was clear—they were determined to disrupt Barcelona’s rhythm and capitalize on any vulnerability.

In contrast, Barcelona appeared sluggish and lacked their usual sharpness. Although they created several clear-cut opportunities, their finishing let them down badly. Young star Lamine Yamal endured a particularly frustrating evening. The winger squandered two close-range chances and then saw his penalty effort crash against the base of the post in first-half stoppage time. It was a moment that symbolized Barcelona’s profligacy in front of goal.

After a goalless first half filled with tension and missed opportunities, Barcelona finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Defender Pau Cubarsi rose highest to meet a cross from Jules Kounde, looping a header into the top corner. It was Cubarsi’s first league goal for Barcelona, and for a brief moment, it seemed the visitors had regained control.

However, their advantage lasted just two minutes. Girona responded immediately through midfielder Thomas Lemar, who calmly tapped home Vladyslav Vanat’s delivery to level the score. The swift equalizer reignited the home crowd and shifted momentum back in Girona’s favor.

The hosts nearly went ahead again 10 minutes later when Viktor Tsygankov’s speculative header caused chaos in the Barcelona penalty area. Goalkeeper Joan Garcia struggled to deal with the situation, but a foul was awarded after Joel Roca was judged to have pushed the keeper on the goal line. It was a narrow escape for Barcelona, but it underscored their defensive fragility.

As the match entered its final stages, Girona continued to press, sensing an opportunity. Their persistence paid off when Fran Beltran capitalized on a defensive lapse to score the decisive goal in the 86th minute. The stadium erupted as Girona edged closer to securing a memorable derby victory.

The closing moments were dramatic. Girona’s Joel Roca received his marching orders in stoppage time after a reckless challenge on Lamine Yamal. Despite being down to 10 men, Girona held firm, defending deep and repelling Barcelona’s late attempts to salvage a point.

The victory ends a three-game winless run for Girona and lifts them to 12th place in the standings. More importantly, it provides breathing room in their fight against relegation, moving them five points clear of the drop zone. For Girona, defeating their illustrious neighbors not only boosts morale but also strengthens belief in their ability to remain in the top flight.

For Barcelona, the implications are far more troubling. Their three-match winning streak in the league has come to an end, and the defeat opens the door for Real Madrid to extend their lead at the top. Madrid are set to face Osasuna, and a victory there could create a five-point gap before Barcelona’s next fixture against Levante.

The loss also highlights deeper issues. Defensive lapses, missed opportunities, and lapses in concentration have crept into Barcelona’s performances at a critical juncture. The heavy Copa del Rey defeat to Atletico Madrid earlier in the week had already shaken confidence. Now, this derby setback adds further pressure on Hansi Flick and his squad.

Lamine Yamal’s missed penalty will undoubtedly attract attention, but the defeat cannot be attributed to one player alone. Barcelona collectively failed to convert their chances and struggled to impose their authority for sustained periods. In high-stakes title races, such inefficiency can prove costly.

With the season entering its decisive phase, Barcelona must respond quickly. The margin for error is shrinking, and every dropped point could determine the championship outcome. Girona, meanwhile, can celebrate a historic victory that not only strengthens their survival hopes but also disrupts the ambitions of their more celebrated neighbors.
