‘No panic’ over Ireland’s injury list – Sheehan

Ireland hooker Dan Sheehan has expressed strong confidence in the squad selected for Thursday’s opening Six Nations match against France at the Stade de France, despite the absence of several first-choice players. The game, set to kick off at 20:10 GMT, represents a challenging start for Andy Farrell’s side, who are missing multiple key starters due to injury, alongside the suspension of Bundee Aki.

Farrell revealed his team on Tuesday morning, navigating a series of absences among players who would normally anchor the squad. Among the missing are Tadhg Furlong, Hugo Keenan, Ryan Baird, and Mack Hansen, all sidelined due to injuries, while Aki is unavailable because of a suspension. Perhaps most concerning for the Irish coaching staff is the depletion in front row options. Usual loose-head Andrew Porter is out, alongside both of his main backups, Paddy McCarthy and Jack Boyle.

This gap in the front row presents a notable challenge, as the role of loose-head is vital in scrummaging stability and overall forward play. In response, Jeremy Loughman has been selected to start, marking his first cap since the 2024 Six Nations. Munster colleague Michael Milne provides additional depth from the bench, reflecting the coaching staff’s trust in emerging talent.

Despite these absences, Sheehan highlighted the team’s preparedness and the depth they have cultivated over recent years. “We have confidence in the people we have,” he said. “We’ve done a good job building depth, and we have loose-heads with international experience. Some teams might struggle with injuries like these, but we have quality cover and players ready to step in. There’s no sense of panic.”

The current situation places the spotlight on Ireland’s strength in depth. Although the squad is without three of their first-choice loose-heads and starting tight-head Tadhg Furlong, Sheehan himself occupies a position where Ireland can boast significant talent. He is set to start at hooker ahead of Leinster teammate Ronan Kelleher, while Ulster’s Tom Stewart has also impressed domestically this season. Sheehan emphasized that the provinces are now producing a strong pipeline of hookers, which benefits the national squad.

“We have some top-quality young hookers across the provinces now,” Sheehan explained. “A few years ago, people might have said there was a shortage, but now every province is producing strong players, and that pushes everyone to perform better. It creates healthy competition and drives standards up.”

Ireland’s form in the Six Nations underscores the competitiveness of the fixture. The past four editions of the tournament have been dominated by either Ireland or France, with the two sides frequently contending for the championship. However, Ireland has struggled to secure victories against France at the Stade de France since 2018, despite achieving success against other major teams. During the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Ireland notably defeated Scotland and South Africa on French soil, showcasing their ability to perform in high-pressure environments away from home.

Sheehan expressed his personal enthusiasm for playing at the Stade de France, citing its vibrant atmosphere and the excitement that comes with competing in one of Europe’s most iconic rugby stadiums. “When people ask about my favorite away stadium, it’s definitely the Stade de France. The crowd is incredible, and the energy is unmatched,” he said.

Beyond the stadium itself, Sheehan highlighted the broader significance of the Six Nations. The tournament, which spans February and March each year, is consistently regarded as the pinnacle of northern hemisphere rugby, providing fans and players alike with some of the most thrilling moments of the sporting calendar. “The Six Nations is always special,” Sheehan said. “It’s the best two months of the year. Even though the start of the year can be a bit slow, the tournament always gives people a lift, and it energizes us as players. Everyone is excited to get going.”

Sheehan’s comments reflect not only optimism but also a sense of resilience and belief in the squad. Despite the unavailability of several key starters, he trusts the selected players to perform effectively and maintain the team’s competitive edge. This confidence stems from a carefully managed development pathway across the provinces, where younger and less-experienced players are given opportunities to gain valuable exposure.

The squad’s depth will be crucial in navigating the challenges posed by France. The hosts are a formidable opponent, and Ireland will need to ensure cohesion in the forwards and effectiveness in set pieces, particularly in the scrums and lineouts. With Jeremy Loughman stepping in at loose-head, the coaching staff is relying on his ability to integrate quickly and execute the technical requirements of the position. Similarly, Michael Milne’s inclusion as a bench option provides flexibility to cover for potential injuries during the match.

Sheehan’s starting role at hooker is emblematic of Ireland’s strength in this position. He will be responsible for key elements such as lineout accuracy, defensive work in the breakdown, and contributing to attacking platforms in open play. The competition for places among Ireland’s hookers has created a positive dynamic, pushing each player to elevate their performances and ensuring the national team maintains high standards in a traditionally specialized position.

The broader picture for Ireland also involves adapting to a squad disrupted by injuries while maintaining strategic objectives. Head coach Andy Farrell faces the challenge of balancing player fitness, tactical execution, and team morale. The ability to draw on the depth of talent and maintain continuity in the face of adversity is a testament to the structures that have been developed across the provincial and national systems.

Looking ahead, the opening Six Nations match against France represents both an opportunity and a test. Ireland will seek to start the campaign strongly, aiming to establish momentum while integrating replacements into the squad seamlessly. For Sheehan and his teammates, confidence and preparation are central to navigating these challenges, with the knowledge that a cohesive and resilient performance could set the tone for the remainder of the tournament.

Overall, while injuries and suspensions have affected several key positions, Ireland’s depth, particularly in the forwards and at hooker, gives them reason for optimism. The team has proven capable of performing at the highest level under pressure, and Sheehan’s perspective reinforces a belief that the available players are up to the task. The Stade de France will test Ireland’s mettle, but the squad’s preparation, resilience, and depth offer the foundation for a competitive start to the 2026 Six Nations campaign.
