The unbroken century-long partnership between Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla was all it needed for South Africa to win over Sri Lanka by nine wickets in a world cup at Durham.
Despite the Proteas being already eliminated from the semi-finals of the world cup with mere one win of their last 7 matches but they still played splendidly against Sri Lanka as they cashed down a target of 204 runs easily with 12.4 overs left for spare.
The Proteas captain Faf du Plessis was able to score 96 runs and was not out off of his 103 balls as he shared the 2nd wicket partnership with Amla for 175 runs.
Amla himself scored 80 runs off of 105 balls which ultimately led to both players scoring the highest partnership score of this year’s world cup.
Sri Lanka has been on the innings spree by winning of all of their matches in the group, expect this one but still have to bear an unbearable sequence based on the results of other groups.
Earlier, Proteas won the toss an decided to et Sri Lankan’s bat first who made the worst start of their world cup campaign yet when the captain of the Sri Lankan team Dimuth Karunaratne misjudged the first ball by Kagiso Rabada and then get pout on the 2nd ball.
Still, Avishka Fernando came to team’s rescue as he scored 30 runs off of 29 balls to take the baton of the powerplay. He shared the 67-run 2nd wicket partnered with Kusal Perera who scored 30 runs before both players were ousted of the pitch in successive overs.
Lankans were not able to score a boundary in more than 17 overs before it was the time when the batsmen one by one started offering their wickets.
When it came for Proteas, Lankans needed to get their wickets quickly in powerplay but they only managed to get the wicket of Quinton de Kock who scored 15 runs at delivery by Lasith Malinga. By that time the rest was taken care by Du Plessis and Amla.
