Henry Patten’s Dramatic Escape from Dubai Amid Middle East Conflict

British tennis star Henry Patten experienced one of the most unusual and stressful weeks of his career after being stranded in Dubai during escalating tensions in the Middle East. The 29-year-old doubles specialist, who recently celebrated a major triumph at the Australian Open, suddenly found himself caught in the middle of a geopolitical crisis following missile attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates.

What began as a routine tennis trip quickly turned into a frightening experience for Patten and dozens of others involved in the tournament. Around 40 players, officials, and media representatives were stranded in the city as travel routes became uncertain following missile strikes attributed to Iran amid the broader regional conflict.

A Shocking Start to the Final

The tension became clear even before the final match of the tournament began. As the players prepared to enter the centre court, a fighter jet flew overhead, instantly reminding everyone that the region was facing serious security concerns.

Patten and his doubles partner Harri Heliovaara had just completed another successful tournament run, winning the title in Dubai and securing their second ATP doubles championship in consecutive weeks.

But their celebration was overshadowed by the rapidly changing situation outside the tennis courts.

Soon after the final, news spread that missile attacks had occurred nearby. Travel plans became uncertain almost immediately, leaving the players unsure about how or when they would be able to leave the country.

Explosions Heard from the Hotel

During the extended stay in Dubai, Patten experienced moments that he later described as surreal and unsettling. From his hotel room, he heard loud explosions in the distance as drones and missiles targeted locations in the city.

At one point during the night, a particularly powerful blast woke him up. The noise came from a drone strike that reportedly hit an area near the airport, only about 10 minutes away from the hotel where many players were staying.

Another alarming moment came when Patten saw a fighter jet flying overhead shortly before a massive explosion occurred nearby. Later reports suggested the blast had struck the US consulate building, located just a short drive from where he was staying.

Despite the dangerous environment, everyday life in Dubai appeared surprisingly normal.

According to Patten, if someone had not been following news updates or checking social media, they might not have realized there was a conflict unfolding around them. From his hotel window he could see people relaxing by the pool and continuing their daily routines.

Even Patten and his partner occasionally went swimming to pass the time as they waited for travel options to reopen.

Attempted Escape Through Oman

As the situation continued to develop, Patten and several others attempted to leave the UAE by land. Their plan involved driving across the border into Oman and catching a flight from the capital city, Muscat.

The journey began with cautious optimism. Patten traveled with Heliovaara, the Finnish player’s wife, and their two young children, hoping they could safely exit the country and avoid further delays.

However, the plan quickly fell apart.

When their UAE-registered car reached the border checkpoint, authorities informed the driver that he did not have the proper documentation required to cross into Oman.

The group then attempted to switch vehicles, squeezing themselves and their luggage into a car registered in Oman. Unfortunately, additional delays occurred as border officials held them up for further checks.

By the time they were finally ready to proceed, too much time had passed. Their chances of catching a flight from Muscat had disappeared.

After spending seven hours traveling, they had no choice but to return to Dubai, effectively ending their escape attempt.

Patten admitted that the experience was mentally exhausting. Preparing for such a long journey had already been stressful, and realizing they would have to return to the starting point after hours on the road was deeply frustrating.

Anxiety in the Air

Eventually, a new opportunity to leave the country appeared. Officials from the ATP Tour began coordinating efforts to help stranded players secure flights out of Dubai.

Representatives from Emirates airline arrived at the hotel and started booking available seats on outgoing flights.

By the time they reached Patten, most direct flights to European cities had already been filled. The best option remaining was an early morning departure that would take him to London through connecting flights in Cairo and Rome.

For Patten, boarding that flight required overcoming a personal fear. He has long admitted to being an anxious flyer, and the circumstances made the experience even more intimidating.

The day before his flight, he witnessed a drone strike close to the airport. Knowing that such incidents had occurred nearby made stepping onto the aircraft particularly nerve-racking.

When he finally boarded the plane, he sat beside an Egyptian passenger who spoke no English. Patten joked that the language barrier may have helped calm the situation, as the two men simply exchanged quiet nods while preparing for take-off.

Nevertheless, the first few hours of that journey were among the most stressful he had ever experienced.

Strange Moments During the Crisis

One moment during the ordeal highlighted the strange contrast between fear and normality.

While waiting in the airport lounge before his flight, Patten met the coach of Italian player Simone Bolelli, Michele Mangiafico.

Patten recalled sitting nervously with a glass of water, visibly shaking due to the stress of the situation. Meanwhile, Mangiafico calmly walked to the buffet and returned with an enormous plate of breakfast, finishing it in just a few minutes.

The contrast between Patten’s anxiety and his companion’s relaxed attitude left a lasting impression.

Questions for the ATP

During the crisis, the ATP faced criticism from some players regarding how the situation was handled. Some questioned why events in the region were not cancelled immediately.

Patten, however, offered a more balanced perspective.

He acknowledged that the escalation in tensions had occurred quickly and unexpectedly, making it difficult for tournament organizers to respond immediately.

Two ATP officials present at the event—Arnau Brugues and Hans‑Juergen Ochs—were responsible for coordinating support for dozens of people caught in the situation.

Patten praised their efforts, noting that they suddenly found themselves responsible for the safety and logistics of 44 individuals inside an active conflict zone.

Still, he admitted that communication from senior leadership could have been more sensitive. At one point, players were asked to decide within 90 minutes whether they would join a charter flight from Muscat, despite having little information about the plan.

In Patten’s view, better crisis management planning might have helped ease the uncertainty.

Tennis Takes a Back Seat

Patten and Heliovaara were originally scheduled to compete in the prestigious Indian Wells Masters in California, one of the most important tournaments of the season.

Technically, they could still have arrived in time to play. However, after such a stressful and exhausting week, the pair decided that competing immediately was not the best decision.

Instead, Patten chose to prioritize rest and spending time with his family and fiancée, who had been worried about him throughout the ordeal.

After a week filled with uncertainty, explosions, and travel chaos, stepping away from tennis—even temporarily—felt like the right choice.
