England Under Pressure as Italy Looms in Crucial Six Nations Clash

England’s campaign in the Six Nations Championship has reached a critical stage, with their early title hopes already severely damaged after just three rounds of competition. Once considered among the favourites to win the prestigious rugby tournament, England now find themselves fighting simply to restore pride as they prepare for a challenging encounter against Italy national rugby union team in Rome.

The image of the Six Nations trophy catching fire after the third round has become a fitting metaphor for England’s struggles this year. Expectations were high heading into the championship, but heavy defeats against strong opponents have left the team searching for answers.

Losses to Scotland national rugby union team and Ireland national rugby union team exposed numerous weaknesses in England’s game. Now, their trip to Rome represents a crucial opportunity to regain momentum before the final round.

A Difficult Away Record

England’s recent record away from home has been a significant cause for concern. Over the past few seasons, the team has struggled to perform consistently outside of Twickenham.

In fact, England have lost four of their last five away fixtures in the Six Nations, matching the worst run of road defeats they have experienced during the tournament’s modern era. Since winning the championship in 2020, England have played 13 away matches in the competition but have managed to win only four.

Particularly troubling has been their inability to secure victories in traditional rugby strongholds such as Edinburgh and Dublin, as well as across France. During that same period, rival teams such as France national rugby union team and Ireland have enjoyed far greater success on the road.

France and Ireland have each recorded 11 away victories in the same timeframe, while Scotland have managed six wins.

Although England still maintain an unbeaten record against Italy in Rome, the challenge they face this weekend may be more difficult than ever before.

Italy’s Rapid Improvement

In the past, Italy were often viewed as the tournament’s underdogs. However, the team has made significant progress in recent years, developing into a competitive side capable of challenging the traditional powers of European rugby.

Italy have already demonstrated their improvement during this year’s championship by defeating Scotland at home. Their performance highlighted several strengths, including physical resilience, strong set-piece play, and the presence of world-class players.

One standout performer has been Tommaso Menoncello, whose outstanding form has made him one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking threats.

Former England winger Ugo Monye believes the match in Rome is far more significant than similar fixtures in previous years.

According to Monye, Italy have developed into a “proper outfit,” capable of exploiting weaknesses in the English defence and pushing the visitors to their limits.

Major Changes by England

England head coach Steve Borthwick has responded to the disappointing performances in the previous rounds by making sweeping changes to the squad.

In total, he has introduced nine personnel changes and three positional adjustments, the largest overhaul made by England in the Six Nations era.

The decision reflects Borthwick’s frustration with the team’s recent performances, particularly the lack of discipline and consistency that has plagued England during defeats against Ireland and Scotland.

However, such drastic changes also carry a significant risk. With several new combinations taking the field together for the first time, England may struggle to develop the cohesion required for a high-pressure international match.

If England were to lose in Rome, it would mark the first time they had ever been defeated by Italy. Such a result would also leave England facing the possibility of finishing the championship with four losses, something that has happened only twice since the tournament expanded more than a century ago.

Tactical Questions

England entered the second round of the championship riding an impressive 12-match winning streak, yet the back-to-back defeats that followed have raised serious questions about the team’s tactical approach.

Critics have frequently argued that England rely too heavily on kicking under Borthwick’s leadership. However, the statistics from the last two rounds suggest that a shift away from this strategy has not necessarily improved the team’s performance.

According to data from Opta, England ranked near the bottom of the tournament for both kicks in play and total kicking distance during the previous two matches.

Despite adopting a more balanced approach, the results were disappointing. England lost both matches convincingly and struggled to maintain control of possession in crucial moments.

Their attacking play has also suffered. Although England were among the most prolific scoring teams last year, they have recently squandered numerous opportunities in the opposition’s red zone.

Turnovers have been a major problem. England have conceded 16 turnovers inside the opponent’s 22-metre area and committed more than 30 additional errors that handed possession back to their opponents.

Defensive Weaknesses

Perhaps the most worrying aspect of England’s performances has been their defence. Opposing teams have repeatedly found space in the wide channels, exploiting weaknesses in England’s defensive structure.

So far in the championship, England have conceded 24 line breaks, with more than half occurring in the areas just outside the midfield.

Missed tackles have also been an issue, particularly in the wider defensive zones.

Monye believes the blueprint for defeating England has become clear: teams that move the ball quickly and attack with width have been able to create serious problems for Borthwick’s side.

Italy, with their increasingly confident attacking style, may attempt to adopt a similar approach.

Italy’s Growing Confidence

Italy’s progress has accelerated significantly since the appointment of Gonzalo Quesada as head coach following the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Under Quesada’s leadership, Italy have shown greater aggression in defence and improved creativity in attack. More importantly, the team has developed the ability to compete at a high level for the full 80 minutes of a match.

Historically, Italy were known for strong starts followed by fading performances late in games. That pattern appears to be changing.

Their victory over Scotland earlier in the tournament demonstrated their ability to maintain intensity until the final whistle.

Strength in the Scrum

One of Italy’s most impressive weapons has been their scrum. During the tournament, they have achieved a higher success rate when challenging opposition scrums than ever before.

The Italian pack has already caused problems for several opponents, including France and Ireland. In fact, their scrum managed to disrupt an Irish front row that included Tadhg Furlong, widely regarded as one of the world’s best props.

England’s scrum has also been strong, meaning the battle between the two forward packs could prove decisive.

A Test of Character

Despite Italy’s progress, England will still enter the match as favourites. The two teams have met 31 times in Test rugby, and England have won every encounter.

However, the narrow 27-24 result when they last met in Rome two years ago suggests the gap between the sides is shrinking.

If England hope to avoid another setback, they must address their biggest problem from the previous matches: slow starts.

Against Scotland, they trailed 17-0 after 30 minutes. Against Ireland, they were already 22-0 behind at the same stage.

Allowing Italy to build an early lead in Rome could prove disastrous.

With players such as Menoncello in outstanding form and the Italian attack growing in confidence, England cannot afford another sluggish beginning.

Ultimately, the match will test England’s resilience and their ability to respond to adversity. Victory would restore some pride after a difficult tournament, while defeat could mark one of the most shocking results in Six Nations history.
