FIFA Unlikely to Move Iran’s World Cup Matches from USA Despite Security Concerns

FIFA has indicated that it is not planning to relocate Iran’s matches at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, despite concerns raised about player safety due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The issue emerged after the president of Iran Football Federation suggested that discussions were taking place to potentially move Iran’s fixtures from the United States to Mexico. These concerns follow escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

However, FIFA released a statement reaffirming its expectation that all matches will proceed according to the official schedule.

Rising Tensions Spark Concerns

The situation comes amid heightened military tensions in the Middle East. Reports of US and Israeli strikes on Iran, along with retaliatory actions by Iran against Israel and US-aligned countries in the Gulf region, have increased security concerns.

In response, Iranian football officials raised questions about whether it would be safe for their national team to travel to the United States for the tournament.

The World Cup is set to take place from 11 June to 19 July and will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Iran’s Scheduled Matches

Iran are scheduled to play their group-stage matches in various US cities. Their fixtures include a match against New Zealand national football team on 16 June in Los Angeles, followed by a game against Belgium national football team on 21 June, also in Los Angeles.

Their final group match is set to take place in Seattle on 27 June against the Egypt national football team.

These locations have been part of the official match schedule announced in December 2025.

Iranian Federation Pushes for Change

Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, publicly expressed concerns regarding the safety of players traveling to the United States.

He stated that if security could not be guaranteed, the team would not travel to the US. Taj also revealed that discussions were being held with FIFA about the possibility of relocating Iran’s matches to Mexico.

This proposal was aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of players and staff during the tournament.

FIFA Responds to Speculation

In response to these concerns, FIFA emphasized that it remains in regular contact with all participating nations, including Iran.

The organization clarified that it is continuing preparations based on the existing match schedule and expects all teams to compete as planned.

FIFA’s stance suggests that, at present, there is no intention to alter the venues of Iran’s matches.

Political Statements Add to Uncertainty

The situation has been further complicated by remarks from Donald Trump, who commented on Iran’s participation in the World Cup.

Trump stated that while Iran are technically welcome to take part, he questioned whether it would be appropriate given the current security situation.

He suggested that concerns for the safety of the Iranian team could justify reconsidering their participation.

However, at other times, Trump has also indicated that he does not oppose Iran’s involvement in the tournament.

Iran’s Position on Participation

Despite the uncertainty, Iran have not withdrawn from the World Cup.

The national team had previously decided to continue with their participation even after earlier tensions escalated, including incidents involving US military actions in Iran.

A recent message shared on the team’s official Telegram account emphasized that FIFA is responsible for organizing the tournament, rather than any individual host nation.

The message also implied that if a host country cannot guarantee security, then the responsibility should lie with that host rather than the participating teams.

Support from FIFA Leadership

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has indicated that discussions with US officials have reassured him that Iran will be allowed to participate.

Infantino stated that assurances were given that all teams, including Iran, are welcome at the tournament.

This position aligns with FIFA’s broader goal of maintaining inclusivity and ensuring that all qualified teams are able to compete.

Concerns from Iranian Government

Despite FIFA’s reassurances, officials within Iran have expressed reservations.

Ahmad Donyamali, the country’s Minister of Sports and Youth, stated that the current conditions may not be suitable for Iran to participate in the World Cup.

Such comments highlight the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the team’s involvement.

However, no official decision has been made to withdraw from the tournament.

Historical Precedents for Relocating Matches

While FIFA appears unwilling to move Iran’s matches, there have been several examples in sports history where fixtures were relocated due to political or security concerns.

In football, Belarus has been forced to play home matches in neutral venues such as Hungary following its support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

One such example was a World Cup qualifier against Scotland national football team, which took place outside Belarus.

In cricket, tensions between India and Pakistan have long resulted in matches being played at neutral venues during international tournaments.

For instance, India refused to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, while Pakistan played matches in Sri Lanka during a recent T20 World Cup.

These examples demonstrate that relocating matches is not unprecedented, though such decisions are typically made under exceptional circumstances.

What Lies Ahead

As the World Cup approaches, the situation remains fluid.

FIFA continues to monitor developments and maintain communication with all participating nations.

For now, Iran are expected to follow the original schedule and play their matches in the United States.

Whether that plan will hold depends on how the geopolitical situation evolves in the coming months.

The safety of players, officials, and fans will remain a top priority for organizers.

At the same time, FIFA faces the challenge of balancing political realities with its commitment to delivering a global sporting event that brings nations together.
