Fede Valverde: From Overlooked Workhorse to Real Madrid’s Match-Winning Star

For many years, Fede Valverde was seen as the tireless engine of Real Madrid — the player who covered every blade of grass, filled gaps, and sacrificed personal glory for the team’s success.

However, on a magical night at the Santiago Bernabéu, the 27-year-old midfielder stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight. His incredible hat-trick against Manchester City secured a dominant 3-0 victory, leaving the English champions with a daunting task ahead of the Champions League last-16 second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

This unforgettable performance marked the first hat-trick of Valverde’s professional career — both for club and country. After the final whistle, he celebrated in a deeply personal way, taking a lap of honour before sharing the moment with his family. The match ball was gifted to his young son Bautista, and together with his wife Mina Bonino and their children, they captured a memory that symbolized years of sacrifice and dedication.

A Journey Years in the Making

Valverde’s rise to stardom did not happen overnight. His journey began in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he grew up in the modest neighborhood of La Unión. His upbringing was far from glamorous. His father worked long hours as a security guard, while his mother cleaned homes and occasionally sold clothes to support the family.

Money was scarce, and like many young dreamers, Valverde had to make do with what he had. His first pair of football boots were second-hand and repeatedly repaired so they could last longer. Despite these challenges, his passion for football never wavered.

As a child, one of his coaches gave him the nickname “Pajarito,” meaning “little bird,” because of the way he moved energetically across the pitch. While the nickname reflected his agility and enthusiasm, his father preferred to instill a stronger mindset in him, encouraging resilience and determination.

Valverde has often spoken about the influence of his father, who pushed him to improve constantly. He was taught that hard work and fighting spirit were essential — lessons that would later define his playing style.

Early Doubts and Lessons Learned

Despite his current reputation as one of football’s hardest-working midfielders, Valverde was not always known for his work rate. As a teenager, he relied heavily on his natural talent and did not prioritize the physical side of the game.

He once admitted that he believed his technical ability alone would be enough to succeed, even comparing his youthful confidence to that of Diego Maradona.

That mindset changed dramatically when a youth coach substituted him for failing to track back and defend. The moment was a turning point. From then on, Valverde committed himself to becoming a complete player, combining skill with relentless effort.

The Arsenal Setback

Before joining Real Madrid, Valverde had an opportunity to impress at Arsenal F.C.. At the age of 16, he spent a week training with the club’s first team in London.

For a young player from Uruguay, the experience was overwhelming — the facilities, the professionalism, and the presence of top-level players. He dreamed of securing a place there and believed it could be the start of his European career.

During his time in London, he faced language barriers, but Emiliano Martínez, then a young goalkeeper at Arsenal, helped him adjust by translating instructions and guiding him through training sessions.

Despite the opportunity, Valverde failed to convince Arsenal’s coaching staff. It was a setback that could have derailed his confidence, but instead, it became motivation to improve.

Real Madrid Comes Calling

Soon after, during the South American Under-17 Championship in Paraguay, Valverde’s life took a dramatic turn. Representatives from Real Madrid visited his hotel and expressed interest in signing him.

This moment marked the beginning of his journey with one of the biggest clubs in the world. Over the next decade, Valverde would grow into a key figure for the Spanish giants.

Since joining Real Madrid, he has made nearly 300 appearances and won multiple trophies, including two UEFA Champions League titles. His versatility, stamina, and tactical intelligence have made him indispensable to the team.

Tactical Brilliance Against Manchester City

In the recent clash against Manchester City, Valverde’s role was crucial. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa entrusted him with a dual responsibility — supporting defense while also exploiting attacking opportunities.

Facing Jeremy Doku, Valverde provided essential cover for right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, ensuring defensive stability. At the same time, he remained a constant attacking threat.

The game plan relied heavily on long passes from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, targeting the right flank where Valverde could use his pace and strength.

The strategy paid off brilliantly. For the opening goal, Courtois delivered a long ball, Valverde won a duel against Nico O’Reilly, surged forward, and finished with precision.

While City focused on stopping Vinícius Júnior, who had a relatively quiet game, Valverde exploited the space on the opposite side, ultimately deciding the match.

Recognition and Legacy

For manager Arbeloa, Valverde’s performance was not surprising. He has previously described the midfielder as the “spiritual embodiment” of Real Madrid — a player who represents the club’s values of hard work, determination, and resilience.

Arbeloa even compared him to club legend Juan Gómez, a name that holds immense significance at the Bernabéu.

Such comparisons highlight how far Valverde has come — from a young boy with second-hand boots to a player who defines one of the world’s biggest football clubs.

From Unsung Hero to Superstar

Valverde’s journey is a testament to perseverance. Once seen as a supporting player, he has evolved into a match-winner capable of delivering on the biggest stage.

His hat-trick against Manchester City was not just a personal milestone but also a statement of his importance to Real Madrid. It showed that he is no longer just the player who runs for others — he is now the one who leads from the front.

As Real Madrid prepare for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, Valverde’s performance has given them a significant advantage. More importantly, it has cemented his status as one of the team’s most influential players.
