Fury unlikely to be world champion again – Wardley

The heavyweight boxing landscape could be set for another major shake-up, with the potential return of Tyson Fury sparking fresh excitement across the sport. If Fury manages to secure a victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov this Saturday, there is a strong possibility that he could call out one of the division’s leading champions for a blockbuster fight later this year.

From a competitive standpoint, such a scenario would not come as a surprise. In fact, discussions about a potential clash had already been circulating even before the announcement of the upcoming bout between the current champion and Daniel Dubois. Interestingly, the champion himself had shown eagerness to face Fury earlier, expressing willingness to step into the ring. However, Fury opted to delay, citing the need for a warm-up fight after spending a year away from active competition.

Despite the intrigue surrounding a possible Fury showdown, the ultimate ambition remains an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk. For any top-tier heavyweight, facing the very best is the ultimate test, and Usyk currently represents the pinnacle of the division. Still, if Fury performs well and the champion successfully defends his title against Dubois, the door could open for negotiations on a high-profile encounter.

Fury’s return itself has been a topic of much discussion. Although he previously announced his retirement, many within the boxing community never truly believed it would be permanent. Known for his unpredictable nature, Fury has a history of stepping away from the sport only to return revitalized. His reappearance—active on social media, engaging with fans, and preparing for another fight—feels less like a comeback and more like the continuation of an ongoing journey.

As one of the most recognizable figures in boxing, Fury’s appeal extends far beyond the ring. With ventures such as his Netflix reality show and appearances in professional wrestling, he has established himself as a crossover star. His personality, charisma, and achievements have made him a central figure in British boxing, ensuring that any fight involving him generates massive interest.

However, questions remain about his ability to reclaim a world title in the current heavyweight landscape. The division is more competitive than ever, and to regain championship status, Fury would likely need to defeat either Usyk or another top contender. Based on current form and momentum, that would be a significant challenge.

There is, of course, another route to championship glory. Should the titles become fragmented—if, for instance, Usyk is stripped of a belt—Fury could find himself competing for a vacant title. In such a scenario, opponents like Lawrence Okolie or Agit Kabayel could come into play. Against fighters of that caliber, Fury would still be considered a strong contender for victory.

Beyond championship pursuits, one fight that continues to capture the imagination of fans is a long-awaited showdown between Fury and Anthony Joshua. Despite years of speculation, the bout has yet to materialize. Regardless of titles or rankings, the demand for this clash remains immense. Even as both fighters age, the public’s desire to see them face off has not diminished.

Turning attention to Fury’s immediate challenge, Makhmudov presents an interesting stylistic matchup. On paper, he appears formidable—a physically imposing fighter with power and aggression. However, stylistically, he may be well-suited for Fury. Makhmudov’s approach is relatively straightforward, relying heavily on strength and direct attacks, but lacking the agility and variation needed to trouble a technically superior opponent.

Fury’s strengths lie in his movement, ring IQ, and ability to control distance. Against a fighter who is less mobile and more predictable, he is likely to dictate the pace of the fight. By staying elusive and picking his shots carefully, Fury could gradually break down Makhmudov over the course of the bout.

That said, Makhmudov does possess knockout power, and any lapse in concentration could prove costly. The key to his success would be closing the distance and applying relentless pressure. Rather than engaging at range—where Fury excels—he would need to get inside, using his size and strength to disrupt Fury’s rhythm.

A possible strategy would involve targeting Fury’s body and maintaining constant activity. By working across different areas—arms, shoulders, and torso—Makhmudov could attempt to wear him down. Sustaining such an approach over 12 rounds would be demanding, but it may represent his best chance of causing an upset.

Fury, meanwhile, must remain fully focused. His previous bout against Francis Ngannou served as a reminder of the dangers of complacency. In that fight, Fury was caught off guard and faced unexpected difficulties. At this stage of his career, such lapses cannot be afforded.

Another point of intrigue is Fury’s training setup. Reports suggest he may be preparing for this fight without a traditional coaching team. While an experienced fighter can rely on self-guidance, the absence of structured coaching raises questions about whether this approach will yield the best results.

Ultimately, the outcome of the fight will reveal much about Fury’s current condition. Observers will be keen to see whether he retains the fluid movement and agility that defined his earlier performances or whether he has adapted his style to rely more on upper-body movement and positioning.

The expectation, however, is that Fury will emerge victorious. A points decision seems the most likely result—one that is clear and controlled, even if not entirely effortless. His experience and skill set should allow him to manage the fight effectively and secure the win.

Yet, the stakes are high. A defeat could have significant implications for Fury’s future. At this stage of his career, a loss might signal the end of his journey at the top level. Rebuilding and climbing back into title contention would be an uphill battle, and retirement could become a realistic consideration.

In contrast, a convincing win would reignite discussions about major fights and reaffirm his status as one of the division’s key figures. Whether it leads to a clash with Usyk, a showdown with Anthony Joshua, or another high-profile bout, Fury’s next move will be closely watched.

For fans and analysts alike, this fight is more than just a contest—it is a defining moment. It will shape perceptions of Fury’s legacy and determine his place in the evolving heavyweight hierarchy.
