How 11 Premier League teams could qualify for Europe
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The idea of having as many as 11 teams from the Premier League competing in European competitions might sound unbelievable at first—but under the current system, it is actually possible. Over recent seasons, qualification for Europe has become increasingly complex, largely due to the introduction of UEFA’s European Performance Spots (EPS), which reward leagues based on their collective performance in European tournaments.

These EPS places are essentially bonus Champions League slots awarded to the two best-performing leagues in Europe each season. For the 2026–27 campaign, England has already secured one of these additional spots, thanks in part to strong performances by clubs like Arsenal. This guarantees that at least eight English teams will compete in Europe next season—but that number could rise significantly depending on how various competitions unfold.

How European Qualification Works

At its core, the EPS system is straightforward—it adds one extra Champions League place to a league’s allocation after all other qualifications are finalized. However, the situation becomes more complicated when domestic cup winners and European trophy holders are factored in.

As things currently stand, England’s European spots break down like this:

  • Top four teams qualify for the Champions League
  • Fifth place (via EPS) also enters the Champions League
  • Sixth place qualifies for the Europa League
  • Seventh place goes into the Conference League

This structure already ensures a minimum of eight teams in Europe. However, the race for these spots is incredibly tight. Clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Brighton & Hove Albion are all battling for position, making the final standings highly unpredictable.

What If Liverpool Win the Champions League?

If Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League and finish in the top four, the overall number of English teams in Europe remains unchanged. The extra qualification spot reserved for the Champions League winner would simply pass to another team in qualifying rounds.

However, things become more interesting if Liverpool win the competition but finish outside the top four. In that case, England would have six teams in the Champions League:

  • The top four teams
  • Liverpool as Champions League holders
  • The EPS team (fifth place)

If Liverpool finish fifth, their qualification would shift the EPS place to the sixth-placed team. However, this adjustment comes with a cost—England would lose one of its Europa League spots because UEFA rules require teams qualifying for multiple competitions to give up the lower-tier berth.

Still, the total number of English teams in Europe would remain at eight in this scenario.

Could England Get Nine Teams in Europe?

Yes, but only under specific conditions. If Liverpool win the Champions League and finish outside all domestic European qualification spots (for example, outside the top six or seven depending on FA Cup results), they would add an extra slot rather than replacing an existing one.

This would increase England’s total representation to nine teams in Europe.

Europa League Winners: Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest

Winning the UEFA Europa League also grants automatic entry into the Champions League. If Aston Villa win the competition, the same logic as Liverpool applies. Their league position determines whether England gains an extra European place or forfeits one.

However, the situation is different for Nottingham Forest. Since Forest are unlikely to qualify for Europe through their league position, winning the Europa League would guarantee an additional Champions League spot for England. This would increase the total number of English teams in Europe to at least nine.

Seven English Teams in the Champions League?

While rare, this scenario is possible. It would require:

  • Liverpool winning the Champions League but finishing outside the top four
  • Nottingham Forest winning the Europa League
  • Both teams not qualifying through league positions

If all of this happens, England could have seven teams competing in the Champions League alone—an unprecedented situation.

Can Seventh Place Qualify for the Champions League?

Surprisingly, yes. This would require a very specific chain of events:

  • Liverpool win the Champions League
  • Aston Villa win the Europa League
  • Both teams finish fifth and sixth

In this case, the EPS place would drop down to the seventh-placed team, granting them Champions League qualification. However, England would lose some Europa League and Conference League spots to balance the system.

What If Crystal Palace Win the Conference League?

The winners of the UEFA Europa Conference League qualify for the Europa League. If Crystal Palace win the tournament—and given their league position, this is their most likely route into Europe—they would add another team to England’s European contingent.

If both Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest win their respective European competitions, England would have at least 10 teams competing in Europe.

The 11-Team Scenario

The most extreme possibility—11 Premier League teams in Europe—requires an almost perfect storm of results:

  • English clubs win all three European competitions (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)
  • Those winners finish outside domestic qualification spots
  • Domestic positions still allocate their usual European places

For example, if Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace all win their respective tournaments while finishing outside the top six or seven, England could reach this unprecedented number.

Though unlikely, this scenario highlights just how flexible—and complicated—the current qualification system has become.

The Role of the FA Cup

The FA Cup also plays a significant role in determining European places. The winner earns a Europa League spot, which can shift other qualifications down the table.

If a team like Manchester City wins the FA Cup and has already qualified for Europe, their spot passes to the next eligible league team. This could allow teams finishing as low as eighth place to enter European competition.

However, if a lower-ranked team such as Leeds or Southampton wins the FA Cup, they would take the Europa League place directly, leaving other league positions unchanged.

A Season Full of Possibilities

With so many variables in play—league positions, cup winners, and European champions—the race for European qualification has never been more exciting or unpredictable. Clubs across the Premier League table still have a chance to secure continental football, making every match crucial.

As the season draws to a close, fans can expect drama, surprises, and possibly history being made. Whether it’s eight, nine, or even 11 teams, the Premier League’s presence in Europe continues to grow stronger.
