Richard Jefferson has officially retired from NBA after 17 years old professional basketball.
Small forward announced this news on Saturday through his Instagram account that he plans to “move on from basketball”. He is looking forward to starting a career in journalism.
He also offered his tribute to his late father as well.
According to the records of LA County’s Sheriff’s Department, Richard Jefferson Sr. was killed at age of 65 years old. He died in a drive-by shooting incident on 19th September in the Compton, California. He was also known by his nickname “Big Rich”.
38 years old Richard Jefferson was the member of the world champion team Cleveland Cavaliers until 2016. He played his last season and 20 games with the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. During these games, he totaled in an average of 1.5 points and 8.2 points per game.
Other than these to teams he has also played for other teams like New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz, and Dallas Mavericks. During his time with all these teams, he played about 1189 games and 809 of them as a starter. During these games, he averaged in 12.6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assist.
He wrote in his Instagram post, “in the previous month I have suffered two life-changing events. One is my decision to move away from basketball and other is the death of my father Big Rich. The support from my friends and family has been huge”.
From 1998 to 2001, Jefferson played for the University of Arizona. He was the 13th overall pick of the 2001’s NBA draft by Houston Rockets.
