HBO is planning to end its storied history of boxing coverage
HBO has broadcasted many renowned fights of boxing like George Forman vs. Joe Frazer, Mike Tyson vs. Buster Douglas.
Bout all of this will be coming to an end by the end of October. The HBO has been coveraging boxing fights for the past 45 years.
According to an HBO statement published at Yahoo, “Going forward in 2019, we will be pivoting away from programming live boxing on HBO. As always, we will remain open to looking at events that fit our programming mix. This could include boxing, just not for the foreseeable future.”
HBO’s enriched boxing coverage history started back in 1975 when Foreman knocked out the heavyweight champion Frazier. They are going to end their long history on October 27th after covering the last boxing event for the middleweight title at the Madison Square Garden.
Peter Nelson; the executive vice president of HBO Sports, said to media, “this sin not a subjective decision. Our audience research team informed us that boxing is no longer the main factor for subscribing to HBO”.
While it will leave a huge void in the television boxing by HBO leaving, many other broadcasting entities are more than happy to fill this void.
One of them is Showtime which has been televising these boxing championships since 1986. They struck a massive deal back in 2013 with Floyd Mayweather. Also last month, the network released news that they have gained a three years extension from the Premiere Boxing championships, the group that features many top current boxers in the world.
