What is SkyJo? The card game being played in the England camp

As England continue their pursuit of success on the pitch, their activities away from football are proving just as important in shaping team unity and morale. While tactical preparation and match performances remain the priority during the World Cup, the squad’s off-field interactions—particularly through recreational games—are playing a vital role in strengthening bonds between players.

During the group stage of the tournament, England’s attention has been focused on facing teams such as Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. However, when the players step away from training sessions and matchday pressure, they have been dedicating time to a variety of leisure activities. Among the most popular games within the squad are Wolf, SkyJo, and Imposter—each contributing in its own way to building camaraderie.

The England team has now spent around two weeks at their World Cup base camp in Kansas City. If they manage to progress all the way to the final, their stay could extend by another three weeks. Given this extended period away from home, maintaining a positive atmosphere and keeping players mentally refreshed has become essential. This is where downtime activities come into play, offering players a chance to relax, unwind, and connect on a personal level.

One of the games familiar to the squad from previous tournaments is Wolf. This game shares similarities with the popular television show “The Traitors,” involving strategy, deception, and deduction. It has been a staple in England camps, providing both entertainment and a way to encourage communication among teammates. Notably, during preparations for the Euro 2024 final against Spain, the players even received a message from the show’s host, Claudia Winkleman, adding excitement to their experience.

While Wolf remains a favorite, newer additions like SkyJo and Imposter have also gained popularity within the group. These games have been introduced to diversify the squad’s entertainment options and keep things fresh during long stretches of downtime. Under the management of head coach Thomas Tuchel and his staff, ensuring players are mentally relaxed is seen as an important aspect of overall performance.

Midfielder Morgan Rogers revealed that SkyJo has quickly become a team favorite, thanks to Jude Bellingham, who introduced the card game to the squad. SkyJo is a numbers-based game where the objective is to achieve the lowest possible score. Players draw, exchange, and reveal cards in an attempt to minimize their total points, with the game ending once someone exceeds 100 points.

Rogers shared how the players often engage in these games even during casual outings. On one occasion, a group including Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Dan Burn, Anthony Gordon, and Elliot Anderson rode their bikes to a coffee shop and spent time playing cards together. Rogers humorously noted his victory in that session, highlighting the friendly competitiveness within the group.

These seemingly simple activities serve a deeper purpose. They help players maintain a balanced mindset, reducing stress and fostering friendships that translate into better understanding on the pitch. A united team is often more resilient, and England’s coaching staff recognize the value of such bonding experiences.

Beyond games, the England setup has taken additional steps to create a comfortable environment for the players. Personal touches, such as placing family photos in players’ rooms, have been introduced to make the squad feel more at home despite being far away. This attention to detail helps players stay emotionally connected to their loved ones while focusing on the tournament.

The squad has also taken advantage of opportunities to explore their surroundings in the United States. For example, Thomas Tuchel, along with captain Harry Kane, Djed Spence, and Dan Burn, visited Sporting Kansas City’s stadium, which is located near their base camp. Such outings provide a refreshing change of scenery and allow players to experience local culture.

Additionally, some players have enjoyed attending live events, including a concert by country music artist Ella Langley. These experiences not only offer relaxation but also create shared memories that strengthen team spirit.

Tuchel has emphasized the importance of creating a “club-like” atmosphere within the national team. By fostering close relationships and a sense of belonging, he aims to replicate the cohesion often seen in successful club sides. This approach appears to be paying off, as players are forming strong connections both on and off the field.

Jordan Henderson, one of the more experienced members of the squad, has played a key role in maintaining morale. According to Rogers, Henderson acts as a guiding figure within the group, often bringing players together and ensuring a positive environment. His leadership extends beyond training sessions, influencing how players interact during their downtime.

Another game that has gained traction among the players is Imposter. This interactive activity involves each participant receiving a secret word via a mobile app—except for one player, who is unaware of the word. The challenge for the group is to identify the “imposter” through conversation and observation. This game encourages communication, quick thinking, and teamwork, all of which are valuable traits on the football pitch.

Rogers also spoke about his close relationship with Jude Bellingham, despite competing for the same position in the team. Both players have known each other since childhood, having grown up in the West Midlands. Their friendship remains strong, even as they vie for the number 10 role in the starting lineup.

Rather than viewing the situation as a rivalry, Rogers emphasized their ability to complement each other. He believes that both he and Bellingham are versatile enough to play in different positions and potentially even alongside each other. This mindset reflects the team-first mentality that England are striving to cultivate.

The friendly banter between players further highlights the strong bonds within the squad. Rogers jokingly mentioned that he and Bellingham refer to Henderson as “uncle,” a nickname that the veteran midfielder reportedly does not appreciate. Such moments of humor contribute to a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Ultimately, England’s approach to team bonding could prove to be a crucial factor in their World Cup journey. While talent and tactics are essential, the importance of unity and morale cannot be underestimated. By investing time in building relationships and maintaining a positive environment, the squad is positioning itself for success.

As the tournament progresses, the balance between focus and relaxation will remain key. England’s ability to stay mentally sharp while enjoying their time together may well determine how far they go in the competition. With a strong sense of togetherness and a supportive environment, they are giving themselves the best possible chance of achieving their World Cup ambitions.
