Brisbane International tournament; Johanna Konta follows Andy Murray out of the tournament to end Great Britain’s interest

Johanna Konta has been tumbled out of the Brisbane International tournament after suffering straight sets defeat in the second round of the tournament.

Konta made a perfect start of the year after winning the first round against the American player Sloane Stephens on Tuesday.

However, she was unable to reproduce the play from that day in her match against the Ajla Tomljanovic, an opponent who is actually ranked nine places below her, at world no. 46.  Konta got defeated by 6-2, and 7-6.

The last of the British player in the tournament Harriet Dart also lasted less than one hour in her match against the Latvian Anastasija Sevastova as she got defeated by 6-2 and 6-0.

The back to back defeat of Kyle Edmund, Johanna Konta, Harriet Dart and Andy Murray has ended Britain’s interest in the tournament which was to serve as the warm-up for the upcoming Australian Open.

The world no.7 and the fourth seed of the tournament Petra Kvitova suffered a defeat against her Estonian opponent Anett Kontaveit by 7-5 and 7-6.

At the ASB Classic in Auckland, the top seed player and the winner of the 2017 WTA Tour Finals Caroline Wozniacki defeated her German opponent Laura Siegmund by 6-3 and 6-2 while the third seed of the tournament Su-Wei-Hsieh managed to gain victory over Monica Puig by 6-1 and 7-6.

As for Maria Sharapova, she was saved by a cramp of her Chinese opponent Wang Xinyu who was forced to retire from their second round match at the Shenzhen Open. Sharapova comforted her Chinese opponent in words, “you played unbelievable, OK? Unbelievable. If you keep playing like that then you will be no. 1, I promise that.”

With this, the five times Grand Slam champion will now play against the world no. 14 Aryna Sabalenka for the last eight.
