A higher ceiling than Messi? What next for Lamine Yamal?

There is no hesitation when Lionel Messi is asked about the brightest talent of football’s new generation. During a promotional event linked to the World Cup, the Argentine legend gave a clear and confident answer. For him, the standout young player in world football today is Lamine Yamal.

Messi’s endorsement carries enormous weight, but what makes Yamal’s rise so compelling is not just the praise he receives. It is the calmness with which he handles it. At only 18 years old, he already displays a level of maturity that sets him apart—not only as a footballer but as an individual navigating global attention.

Yamal’s achievements at such a young age are remarkable. He has already featured in a UEFA Champions League semi-final, played a crucial role in Spain’s European Championship triumph in 2024, and inherited the iconic number 10 shirt at Barcelona—a number that Messi himself wore for nearly a decade and a half. Yet, despite these milestones, what stands out most is his composure. He does not appear overwhelmed by expectations or comparisons. Instead, he moves forward with clarity and self-belief.

Comparisons to Messi are inevitable. Both players are left-footed and possess extraordinary dribbling ability, capable of gliding past defenders with ease. There is a similar elegance in how they play, making complex movements appear effortless. Statistically, Yamal has already surpassed Messi’s early career involvement at Barcelona. By the age of 18, he has accumulated over 150 appearances for the club, whereas Messi had only reached around 40 appearances at a similar stage in his career.

Despite these comparisons, many believe it is too early to suggest Yamal will reach Messi’s legendary status. However, there is growing consensus that he has the potential to follow a similar path. Football icons and analysts have begun to openly acknowledge his exceptional ability.

Ronaldinho, who played alongside Messi during Barcelona’s golden era, has drawn a direct connection between the generations. He suggested that after the history he and Messi created, it is now Yamal’s time to shine. According to Ronaldinho, the level of skill and confidence Yamal has shown at such a young age is extraordinary.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has also praised Yamal, even suggesting that his early career performances might surpass those of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age. While such claims are bold, they reflect the excitement surrounding the young Spaniard’s development.

Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente sees something deeper than just technical ability. He describes Yamal as a naturally gifted player, someone who possesses a rare quality that distinguishes true footballing geniuses. According to him, players like Yamal have a special aura that signals greatness from an early stage.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick shares a similar perspective. Having observed Yamal closely in training and high-pressure matches, Flick describes him as a genius. He notes that players typically take years to reach the level of maturity Yamal already demonstrates. For Flick, talents like Yamal appear only once in decades.

What truly differentiates Yamal from other young stars is his mindset. While he respects Messi and considers him the greatest player in history, he is firm in his desire to carve out his own identity. He has openly stated that he does not want to be compared to Messi or replicate his career. Instead, he aims to create his own legacy.

This approach extends to comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo as well. Yamal acknowledges Ronaldo’s achievements but emphasizes the importance of individuality. He believes that the greatest players succeed because they remain true to themselves, and he intends to follow the same philosophy.

Football history is filled with young players once labeled as the “next Messi,” many of whom struggled to meet expectations. Names like Bojan Krkic, Giovani dos Santos, and Ansu Fati serve as reminders of how difficult it is to sustain early promise. Yamal appears determined to avoid that narrative by focusing on enjoyment rather than pressure.

For him, football is about expression and joy. He wants fans—especially young ones—to admire him for his own style, not as a replica of past legends. Despite ongoing discussions about future Ballon d’Or success, Yamal insists he is not focused on individual awards. His primary goal is to enjoy the game and achieve success with his club and national team.

Interestingly, Yamal’s footballing influences extend beyond traditional wingers. As a child, he was inspired not only by Messi but also by Luka Modric. He admired Modric’s vision, passing ability, and intelligence on the ball. This influence is reflected in Yamal’s evolving playing style.

Although he is primarily deployed as a winger, his role has begun to shift. Data from recent seasons shows that he increasingly operates in central areas, acting as a secondary playmaker rather than staying wide. His ability to read the game and deliver precise passes highlights his versatility.

Coaches who worked with him during his development recognized this potential early on. They observed that Yamal thrives when he is involved in building play, suggesting that his future may lie in a more central role. Some even believe he could transition into a false nine position, similar to how Messi evolved during his career.

This tactical flexibility adds another dimension to his game. While pace and dribbling define traditional wingers, central roles demand vision, decision-making, and creativity—all qualities Yamal possesses. His understanding of space and timing allows him to influence matches in multiple ways.

As the World Cup approaches, Yamal’s importance to Spain continues to grow. He has already expressed confidence in the team’s chances, boldly predicting success. Behind that confidence lies a lifelong dream. For Yamal, playing in the World Cup is more than a professional milestone—it is a personal ambition shaped by years of imagining himself on the biggest stage.

He has spoken about envisioning his family watching him from the stands and the pride that would bring. Winning the tournament is a goal he holds close, and given his rapid development, it is not an unrealistic aspiration.

Spain will enter the competition as one of the favorites, with Yamal at the heart of their plans. At just 18 years old, he represents both the present and the future of Spanish football. By the time the tournament reaches its decisive stages, he will still be a teenager—yet already carrying the expectations of a nation.

In many ways, Yamal’s journey is just beginning. The comparisons, the praise, and the pressure will only intensify. But if his early career is any indication, he possesses the mindset and talent to handle it all.

Rather than chasing the shadows of Messi or Ronaldo, Lamine Yamal is building something entirely his own. And that, perhaps, is what makes him truly special.
