Captain Tavernier to leave Rangers after 11 years

James Tavernier has officially confirmed that he will leave Rangers at the end of the current season, bringing an emotional close to an extraordinary 11-year journey at Ibrox. The 34-year-old right-back admitted that the decision to move on was far from easy, especially given the deep connection he has built with the club, his teammates, and the fans over more than a decade.

Tavernier first revealed earlier in the week that he had not yet been offered a contract extension by the Scottish Premiership side. With his current deal nearing its expiration, uncertainty surrounded his future. However, he later took to social media to confirm that he would indeed be departing in the summer, marking the end of one of the most consistent and impactful careers in modern Rangers history.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Tavernier expressed heartfelt gratitude for everything Rangers has given him. Since arriving in 2015 from Wigan Athletic under then-manager Mark Warburton, he has grown into one of the most influential figures at Ibrox. Over the years, he has made an incredible 562 appearances, scoring 144 goals and providing 148 assists—remarkable statistics for a defender.

The Englishman was appointed club captain in 2018 by Steven Gerrard, a moment he described as one of the proudest achievements of his career. Leading Rangers onto the pitch, wearing the captain’s armband, and representing the club in such a significant role has been something he deeply cherished. He emphasized that the honor meant more to him than words could fully capture.

Despite announcing his upcoming departure, Tavernier made it clear that his focus remains firmly on finishing the current campaign strongly. Rangers are currently second in the Scottish Premiership and are locked in a tight three-way title race with Hearts and defending champions Celtic. With only five matches remaining, the season still holds the potential for a dramatic conclusion.

Tavernier reassured supporters that he will continue to give his all until his final appearance for the club. His commitment and professionalism have been hallmarks of his time at Rangers, and he intends to maintain those standards until the very end. While he has not yet revealed his next destination, he hinted that his playing career is far from over.

Throughout his time at Rangers, Tavernier has experienced both highs and lows. He has played under 10 different managers, adapting to various tactical systems and styles of play. Despite the constant changes around him, he remained a consistent presence and a key contributor on the pitch.

One of the defining moments of his career came during the 2020-21 season, when he played a crucial role in helping Rangers secure the league title under Gerrard, famously ending Celtic’s run of nine consecutive championships. He also contributed significantly to the team that reached the final of the UEFA Europa League under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and lifted the Scottish Cup. Later, he added a League Cup winner’s medal under Philippe Clement.

Individually, Tavernier has achieved extraordinary milestones. In 2024, he became the highest-scoring defender in British football history, surpassing previous records with his impressive goal tally. His ability to contribute offensively from the right-back position has been a defining feature of his game.

While some critics have attempted to downplay his achievements by pointing out that many of his goals came from penalties, such arguments overlook the broader picture. In addition to his goals, Tavernier’s 148 assists highlight his creativity and attacking influence. His consistency in delivering goals and assists season after season sets him apart from most defenders.

Even in what will be his final season at Rangers, Tavernier continues to lead by example. He is currently the club’s top scorer with 14 goals and has contributed six assists, totaling 20 goal involvements. For many full-backs, such numbers would represent a career-best campaign. For Tavernier, they have become a standard expectation.

Over the past decade, he has consistently delivered impressive attacking returns. In multiple seasons, he scored 15 or more goals, including standout campaigns where he netted 19, 18, and 18 goals in consecutive years. His 24-goal season in 2023-24 further underlined his exceptional ability to influence matches.

In European competitions, Tavernier has also made his mark. He is level with Ally McCoist for Rangers’ European goals and was the top scorer in the 2021-22 Europa League campaign, despite Rangers finishing as runners-up. These achievements further cement his place among the club’s most notable players.

However, his time at Rangers has not been without criticism. As captain, he often found himself under intense scrutiny, particularly during challenging periods for the team. Questions were sometimes raised about his defensive capabilities and leadership, but his overall contributions and commitment to the club have remained undeniable.

Longevity in modern football is rare, especially at a club with the expectations and pressures of Rangers. Tavernier’s 11-year spell stands as a testament to his resilience, professionalism, and ability to perform at a high level over an extended period.

Despite his individual success, one aspect that may leave him with a sense of unfinished business is the relatively small number of major trophies won during his time at the club. While he played a pivotal role in key triumphs, Rangers often fell just short in other competitions, particularly in domestic title races.

Nevertheless, Tavernier’s impact on the club cannot be overstated. During periods of instability and transition, he was often the player who stepped up, delivering crucial goals and performances when the team needed them most. His leadership and consistency provided a sense of stability in an ever-changing environment.

As he prepares to leave, there is a strong desire within the club to give him the perfect send-off. Winning the Premiership title this season would not only be a fitting conclusion to his Rangers career but would also strengthen his legacy among the club’s greats.

Looking ahead, Tavernier’s departure marks the end of an era for Rangers. Replacing a player of his quality, experience, and influence will be no easy task. His contributions over the past decade have set a high standard for future players to follow.

For the fans, his exit will undoubtedly be an emotional moment. Tavernier has been a central figure in the team for over a decade, and his performances have created countless memorable moments. From crucial goals to inspiring leadership, he has left a lasting impression on the club and its supporters.

As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on Rangers and their pursuit of the league title. For Tavernier, it represents one final opportunity to add to his legacy and leave the club on the highest possible note.
